Manchester Monarchs News Release
OMAHA, NE - A multi-point game for right wing Konstantin Pushkarev, left wing Jeff Tambellini and right wing Brad Smyth lifted the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-1 victory over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in front of 2,969 fans on Friday night.
Manchester (26-11-1-4, 57 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division. Omaha (16-21-1-7, 40 points) is in fifth place in the West Division.
Pushkarev put two tallies up for the Monarchs in the first period for a 2-0 lead. The first goal came at 15:11 when defenseman Reagan Rome shot the puck from the right point. Rome's shot jumped through traffic, bounced off bodies, including Smyth, and landed in the hands of Pushkarev. The rookie threw the puck at the net as he fell to the ice for his 11th goal of the season.
Pushkarev's second goal of the game came on the power play at 19:07. Defenseman Marty Wilford sent a pass up to Tambellini and the left wing shot the puck at Ak-Sar-Ben Knights goaltender Brent Krahn. Tambellini picked up his own rebound and dropped a pass back to Pushkarev at the left face-off dot who rifled a shot past Krahn to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights cut the Monarchs lead in half as center Justin Taylor shot a backhand past Manchester's goaltender Barry Brust at 7:55 of the middle frame. Defenseman Mark Giordano flipped the puck to Taylor in the slot for the backhand and his ninth goal of the season. Right wing Carsen Germyn assisted on Omaha's lone goal of the game by winning the face-off deep in the Monarchs zone.
Smyth gave the Monarchs back their two-goal lead at 12:44 of the second period. Defenseman Richard Seeley fired a slap shot from the left point that bounced off of Krahn's left shoulder. The rebound landed perfectly in front of Smyth who shot in his team leading 21 goal of the season. Center Connor James also assisted on the play.
Tambellini earned his second assist of the game by shooting a hard slap shot in on Krahn. Tambellini's shot knocked Krahn down and sent the rebound to left wing Noah Clarke for his eighth of the season at 6:47 of the third period. Right wing Lauri Tukonen also assisted on Clarke's goal that soared over a sprawling Krahn and brought the score to 4-1.
Brust (10-2-1) earned his tenth victory of the season, fourth straight win, by stopping 26 shots. Krahn (9-12-6) took the loss with 21 saves.
Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Omaha was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs' next stop on their Midwest trip is against the Iowa Stars at the Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, January 21 at 8:05 p.m. (EST).
