Norfolk Admirals News Release

The Admirals fell to the Springfield Falcons 5-2 on Friday night in Massachusetts.

The Admirals jumped out to a 1-0 lead 60 seconds into the first period. Carl Corazzini skated into the offensive zone two-on-one with Dustin Byfuglien. Corazzini faked a shot and then passed the puck in front of a sliding defenseman to a wide-open Byfuglien. Since Springfield netminder Brian Eklund had committed to defending Corazzini, all Byfuglien had to do was tap the puck into the yawning cage for his seventh goal of the season at 1:00. However, the Falcons flew back with goals on their first two shots of the game. Mike Egener scored on a slap shot from the point through a screen at 4:14. Just over a minute later, Admirals puckstopper Corey Crawford sent an errant clearing attempt onto the blade of Mitch Fritz, who fired a slapper into the back of the net at 5:39. Despite out-shooting Springfield 14-4 in the period, Norfolk trailed 2-1 going into the first break.

The Falcons doubled their lead 7:05 into the second stanza. Zbynek Hrdel passed the puck from the corner to left of Crawford to Ryan Vesce in front of the crease. Vesce one-timed it past Crawford five-hole. After the goal, Scott Reid replaced Crawford in net after he allowed three goals on eight shots. Springfield took a 4-1 lead after David Spina's centering pass deflected off defenseman James Wisniewski's skate and past Reid on the power play at 18:13. The Admirals were out-shot 10-3 in the middle frame and went into the locker room trailing by three goals after 40 minutes.

Norfolk attempted to mount a comeback early in the final frame. A sliding Falcons' defender blocked Martin St. Pierre's shot from the slot. Mark Cullen picked up the loose puck and scored at 4:09 to bring the Admirals within two goals of tying the game. However, Fritz's second goal of the game at 9:40 sealed the victory for Springfield by a final score of 5-2.

Corey Crawford stopped five of eight shots and was saddled with the loss. Scott Reid entered in the second period and made 11 saves on 13 shots. Brian Eklund got the win for Springfield and stopped 27 of the Admirals' 29 shots.
