January 20, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - Martin Prusek stole the game for Syracuse on Friday night with a 35-save effort against the Barons. Ryane Clowe scored the lone tally of the evening for Cleveland.
Syracuse's checking lines did the damage in the opening period establishing a 2-1 lead. Brian Gornick scored his second goal of the season at the 4:29 mark on an assist from Brandon Sugden giving the Crunch a 1-0 lead. Barons goaltender Nolan Schaefer then got beat on a rebound strike from Greg Mauldin, who scored his ninth of the season for a 2-0 lead. However, Syracuse could not hold on to the advantage surrendering a power play goal to Barons forward Ryane Clowe. The power forward's sixth of the season trimmed the lead in half assisted by Patrick Rissmiller and Ray DiLauro. Martin Prusek made eight saves in the opening period for the Crunch.
An evenly played second period resulted in no goals for either team. Syracuse continued to lead 2-1 after the first forty minutes. The Crunch out-shot the Barons 11 to 9 in the period.
Prusek made the difference on the night with 18 third period saves preserving a Syracuse win. The Barons out-shot the Crunch 36-21 in the game including an 18-7 margin in the final frame, but could not beat Prusek, who earned his sixth win of the season with a 35-save effort. Jamie Pushor scored the game's final goal on a power play, and into an empty net, with Nolan Schaefer pulled out of the Barons goal in a desperation move.
The Barons longest road stretch of the season wraps up tomorrow night with a rematch at Syracuse. The game begins at 7:30pm EST and will be broadcast live, in both video and audio format, through the Barons official web site, www.clevelandbarons.net.
