Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven games as they defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 at Copps Coliseum on Friday night. Graham Mink's power-play goal late in the third proved to be the game-winner as Jake Allen stopped 29 out of 30 shots giving him his ninth win of the year.
Allen ran his personal winning streak to 5-0-0 while stopping Bulldog's goaltender Curtis Sanford's five-game streak in the process. Both netminders had entered the game with identical 8-1-0 records and Allen's performance lowered his goals-against average to 1.24.
The Rivermen outshot the Bulldogs in a scoreless first period, 7-6, and both teams killed off three power plays. Mixed in with that was a 1:45 five-on-three advantage for Hamilton that Peoria killed off.
Hamilton got on the board first on the power play at 14:11 of the second, which ended Peoria's streak at 38 straight penalty kills. Kyle Klubertanz's shot from the point was stopped by Allen, but Andreas Engvist slid home the rebound for his third of the year. J.T. Wyman also recorded an assist on the play, his eighth of the year.
Phil McRae answered off an Alex Henry turnover in front of the Hamilton net with his eighth goal of the saeson unassisted at 18:05. It was McRae's 14th point of the year, which leads all Rivermen rookies and places him the third on the team behind Graham Mink (19) and T.J. Hensick (16).
Peoria scored the only goal of the third period, which proved to be the game-winner at 16:15 off the stick of Mink. Hensick made a perfect pass to Mink in the slot who was denied on his first attempt, but collected his own rebound and finished with an off balance shot for his eighth of the year, which is tied for the team lead with McRae. Nathan Oystrick was also given an assist on the goal.
The Rivermen were outshot 16-7 in the second period, and 30-20 in the game. Peoria went 1-6 on the power-play and Hamilton went 1-7 on the power-play.
With the win the Rivermen are 3-0-0 on their current road trip which will end on Saturday in Cleveland against the Lake Erie Monsters. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. CT in the first meeting of the year for the two clubs. It will mark the return of Hensick and Derek Peltier to Cleveland while the Rivermen will see current Monsters' winger Julian Talbot in an opposing jersey for the first time. The game can be heard locally on 96.5 ESPN Radio or online on www.rivermen.net.
