Amerks Down Crunch in High Scoring Affair

December 3, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

The Rochester Americans snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-5 win tonight Syracuse Crunch at The Blue Cross Arena. The Amerks are now 3-8-0-0 at home this season, having captured their second win over their in-state rivals. The game was the second of 10 meetings between the two clubs

Leading the way for the Amerks tonight were Scott Timmins (2+1), Michal Repik (0+3) Evgeny Dadonov (1+1) and AJ Jenks (1+1), who each had multiple-point games. Eric Selleck (1+0) and David Marshall (1+0) both scored their first goals as Amerks. Jacob Markstrom earned his eighth win with 36-save performance.

The top performers for the Syracuse Crunch tonight were Trevor Smith (2+0), Joffrey Lupul (0+3), Josh Green (1+1) and Brett Festerling (0+2), who had multiple-point games. Leigh Salters (1+0) and Jake Newton (1+0) ended the night with one goal apiece. Timo Peilmeier and Jean-Philippe Levassuer combined for 16 saves in the losing effort tonight.

The Amerks jumped out to an early lead in the opening minutes of the game when Dadonov scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. After a scramble in front of the Syracuse net, Festerling fanned on his attempted clearing pass, and as a result, the puck ended up on Dadonov's stick. Already being stationed in the near slot, and with Pielmeier not expecting the quick turnover, Dadonov slipped the puck between Pielmeier's legs and into the back of the net to put Rochester up just 1:12 into the contest. The second-year pro also skated in his 200th professional game tonight.

A very odd and unfortunate bounce provided Selleck with his first pro goal at 17:43 of the period. Chasing a loose puck into the Syracuse zone, Selleck outhustled the Crunch defenders and flipped the puck at Pielmeier, who came out of the net to make the play. After Pielmeier made initial contact with the puck, it caromed off a back-checking Mark Mitera and trickled back once again through the Syracuse's goaltenders legs, resulting in Selleck's first goal of his career and a 2-0 lead for the Amerks.

Syracuse would respond less than a minute later to cut the lead in half as Smith deflected in Festerling's point shot at to make it a 2-1 game. The Amerks answered back, however, with back-to-back goals from Timmins to restore their two-goal lead. The first, coming exactly 20 seconds after Smith's tally, was a textbook wrap-around goal that eluded Pielmeier from behind the net. That would be the end of Pielmeier's night recording six saves in just under 19 minutes of service.

Just over 30 seconds later, Timmins struck again, this time tipping in AJ Jenks' shot from the high slot to send Rochester up 4-1 after 20 minutes of play. Repik, who joined the Amerks this afternoon from the Florida Panthers, had three assist in the first period to extend his team lead in points.

The Crunch answered back early in the second scoring three unanswered goals when Newton fired one home over Markstrom's shoulder. Minutes later, the Crunch cut the lead down to one when forward Maxime Macenauer tipped in a shot from teammate Mat Clark from the top of the zone. Syracuse tied the game up at 12:52 after Smith converted off Green's rebound for his second goal of the game to even things up at four a piece.

Rochester regained the lead at 3:53 into the third as Marshall scored his first goal as an Amerk. Taylor and Dadonov picked up the helpers. Dadonov made a slick behind-the-back pass to Marshall, who finished by tucking the puck just inside the near post past Levassuer putting the Amerks back on top.

Jenks added to the Amerks lead late in the third period. Timmins contributed his third point of the night as he dished the puck to Jenks, who wristed a shot that went through the five hole of Levassuer sending the score to 6-4. Syracuse came back to score cutting the lead back to one as Green was assisted by Lupul and Nicolas Deschamps. The Amerks would hold of the Crunches empty net effort to tie things up and win tonight's contest 6-5.

The Amerks remain at home on Saturday, December 4th as they exchange pleasantries with the Albany Devils for the third time this season. Game time is slated for 7:35 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. The game will be carried live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. Fans can also tune into the live telecast on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26. Rochester and Albany currently split the season series after the Amerks dropped a 4-0 decision to the Baby Devils in the last meeting between the two teams.
