Norfolk Admirals News Release
Mike Angelidis tied an AHL Admirals record with a five-point game and joined Matt Fornataro and Marc-Antoine Pouliot in scoring a pair of goals as the Norfolk Admirals (13-6-3-1) defeated the Atlantic Division-leading Manchester Monarchs (15-8-1-1), 7-2, on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Norfolk improved to 3-1-0-0 through four legs of its six-game road trip, which continues tomorrow night with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop against the Portland Pirates.
Blair Jones also scored for Norfolk while goaltender Cedrick Desjardins earned his fifth consecutive win for the Admirals.
The Admirals took the lead just 1:49 into the game on Angelidis' first goal of the game. Mathieu Roy, who was returned to the Admirals earlier in the day from the Tampa Bay Lightning, sent a shot from the right point. Angelidis deflected the shot from the right edge of the slot past the blocker of Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff for a 1-0 lead for the visitors.
Norfolk took a 2-0 lead just over ten minutes later. A Monarchs defenseman attempted a shot from the right point of the Admirals zone but missed the shot. Angelidis stole the puck and sped through the neutral zone toward Zatkoff. He dropped a pass to Fornataro in the left circle, and Fornataro sent a shot over the left shoulder of Zatkoff at 12:23.
Manchester closed its gap to one goal just under five minutes later on the power play. Oscar Moller sent a one-timer from the left point that was blocked by Desjardins. However, Dwight King found the rebound in the low slot and sent it into the net at 17:10, cutting the Admirals' lead to 2-1.
Norfolk restored its two-goal lead early in the second period on Fornataro's second goal of the game. The Monarchs were unable to corral a bouncing puck in the slot. Paul Szczechura poked the puck forward to Fornataro in the low slot, and Fornataro cradled the puck on his backhand before sending a shot over the right leg of Zatkoff at 4:45 for a 3-1 Admirals lead. The goal was Fornataro's seventh of the season and Angelidis earned the second assist on the play.
Jones put Norfolk ahead by three goals less than four minutes later. Angelidis sent a pass from behind the net to Pierre-Cedric Labrie in the slot. Labrie attempted a shot that went wide, bouncing off the end boards behind the net and ricocheting back to the slot on the opposite side. Jones found the carom and quickly stashed it into the net for his eighth goal of the season.
Angelidis netted his second goal and fifth point of the game with 1:05 left in the second period. Roy attempted a shot from the right point that was blocked. Angelidis found the loose puck in the right circle and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Zatkoff for his seventh goal of the season.
Pouliot made it 6-1 Admirals with only 22 seconds remaining in the second period. He sent a shot from the left circle that went off the left arm of Zatkoff on its way into the net for a fourth Admirals second-period goal.
The Monarchs closed their gap to four goals as a power play expired 2:34 into the final frame. Patrick Mullen sent a pass from the left circle to Bud Holloway on top of the crease. Holloway chipped a shot past the past the glove of Desjardins to cut Norfolk's lead to 6-2.
However, Pouliot restored the Admirals' five-goal lead and closed out scoring exactly 8:00 into the third period. He cut across the slot from the left circle to the right circle and sent a wrist shot past the right leg of goaltender Martin Jones, who had replaced Zatkoff to begin the third period. The goal was Pouliot's sixth of the season with Norfolk.
Cedrick Desjardins (25 shots, 23 saves) earned ninth win of the season, improving to 9-4-1. Jeff Zatkoff (21 shots, 15 saves) suffered the loss through the first two periods. Martin Jones (7 shots, 6 saves) did not receive a decision after playing the third period.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Manchester was 1-6.
