Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that center Matt Herr has been selected to play for the PlanetUSA Team at the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic. It is Herr's third straight selection to the PlanetUSA squad. He represented the Hershey Bears in 2001-02, and was named to the starting lineup last year, his first season with the Bruins.
Herr leads the Bruins with 8-16-24 totals in 28 games, despite missing seven games recently due to a knee injury. He scored a penalty shot goal on December 13 in a 3-2 win at Lowell, the first P-Bruins' penalty shot goal in five years. The 27-year-old native of Hackensack, New Jersey was a 2002-03 AHL First-Team All-Star after posting career-high 34-38-72 totals in 77 games with Providence. He also led the AHL with 11 game-winning goals, a P-Bruins' single-season record. Herr, now playing in his sixth professional season out of the University of Michigan, was originally selected by the Washington Capitals with their fourth pick, 93rd overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He was also selected as a pitcher by the Atlanta Braves in the 29th round of Major League Baseball's 1994 Draft. Herr was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins on July 18, 2002.
The 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic will be held at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the home of the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Skills Competition will be held on Sunday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m. The All-Star Game will be played on Monday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m.
The Bruins will conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday night in Springfield, when they face off with the Falcons at 7:35 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WDDZ AM-550. The Bruins will return home to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 16 at 7:05 p.m.
