Babchuk Named to All-Star Team

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The American Hockey League (AHL) announced today that defenseman Anton Babchuk of the Norfolk Admirals has been selected to the PlanetUSA All-Star Team for the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic in Grand Rapids, MI, on February 8 and 9.

Babchuk is playing in his first professional season with Norfolk. Originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (21st overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the 19-year old has registered six goals, five assists (11 points), a minus-1 rating and 38 penalty minutes in 40 games this year. The rookie blueliner was recalled by Chicago earlier today and is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the team hosts Calgary.

"The organization is proud Anton was selected to take part in the annual All-Star Classic," stated Admirals' General Manager Al MacIsaac. "His inclusion on the PlanetUSA Team is a true reflection of how he has played this year and is a much deserved honor."

The 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic will take place at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI, home of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. The event gets underway on Sunday, February 8, with the 2004 AHL All-Star Skills Competition at 7:00 p.m. (ET). The annual All-Star Game follows at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Monday, February 9, and will be televised live in the United States and Canada.

The PlanetUSA team will be comprised of players born in the United States and Europe, and will compete against a team of Canadian All-Stars, who were announced yesterday.

The Admirals' next games are Saturday, January 10 and Sunday January 11 versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (New York Islanders). Saturday's match begins at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday's contest faces off at 4:00 p.m.
