Marlies defenceman to represent Canadian team in Binghamton, NY on January 28

The Toronto Marlies, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that defenceman Derrick Walser has been selected as a member of the Canadian team for this month's 2008 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Reebok at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY. Walser is one of 24 players chosen to represent the Canadian team at the All-Star Classic.

The New Glasgow, Nova Scotia native is tied for fourth in defenceman scoring in the AHL with 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) and has appeared in all 35 of the Marlies games this season. Walser has netted three game-winning goals this season and is tied for the team lead with six power play goals. He played in the 2001-02 AHL All-Star game in St. John's, Newfoundland, representing the Syracuse Crunch.

Last season, the 5'10, 196-pound defenceman played in nine games for the Columbus Blue Jackets, registering two goals, both on the power play. Walser has recorded 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 91 career games in the NHL, all with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Marlies begin an eight-game road trip on Thursday, January 10 against the Admirals - AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators - at Milwaukee's Bradley Center 8:00 p.m. EST.
