Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Dustin Kohn's goal with under five minutes to play in the third period tied the score but the Portland Pirates were able to push two tallies past Sound Tigers' starting goalie Joey MacDonald to win 5-3. Drew Miller scored his first three goals of the season for the hat-trick.
The Pirates opened the scoring on Miller's first goal of the season at 6:57 of the opening period. Miller received a pass from behind the net and snapped a shot over MacDonald's shoulder for the 1-0 lead. Andrew Ebbett and Joe Callahan picked up helpers on the play.
Sound Tigers' Trevor Smith tied the score at one with just under four minutes remaining in the first. Micheal Haley fed a pass in the slot to Smith where he snapped an off balance shot to the far post, beating Pirates' goalie, Gerald Coleman for his second goal of the season. Also assisting on the goal was Pierre Luc-Faubert in his first game with the Sound Tigers.
Portland's Geoff Platt put the Pirates back on top at 2-1 about five minutes into the second period. Platt tapped in an Ebbett pass from the slot between the pads of MacDonald for his 20th goal of the season. Miller also added an assist.
Just under three minutes later Frans Nielsen found the back of the net when he shoveled the puck through Coleman on a feed from the corner by Tambellini. The goal was Nielsen's sixth of the season, while Bentivolgio also added an assist on the game tying goal.
Miller scored his second of the game at 4:23 of the final frame and giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead when he scored on a quick wrist-shot from the top of the left circle. The goal was unassisted and was his second of the season.
The Sound Tigers tied the game at 3-3 with less than five minutes to play in regulation when Kohn jammed the puck under Coleman for his second goal of the season. Ben Walter and Tambellini were credited with the assists on Kohn's goal.
The game did not stay tied for long as Stephen Dixon put a wrist shot past MacDonald, reclaiming the lead for Portland just 52 seconds later. Petteri Wirtanen and Andy Schneider added assists on Dixon's ninth of the season.
Miller's hat trick goal put the game away about two minutes later. After MacDonald made the first stop on a Brian Salcido shot, Miller picked up the rebound in the slot, pulled it to his left and slid it into the net for his third goal of the game and this season.
MacDonald finished with 33 saves in net for the Sound Tigers, while Coleman turned aside 28.
The Sound Tigers return to action again on Friday night as they travel to Binghamton to play the Senators at 7 p.m. It will be Kyle Okposo's first professional game before the team returns on Saturday to face-off against the Springfield Falcons at 7 p.m. The Senators will then stop in Bridgeport on Sunday to take on the Sound Tigers at 4 p.m.
