Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Devils were able to draw first blood, but it was the Philadelphia Phantoms scoring four unanswered goals en route to a 4-2 win on Wednesday at Tsongas Arena. Phantom center Darroll Powe led the charge with a goal and two assists on the night.
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the second period, it was Powe getting the helper as Philadelphia took their first lead of the contest. Powe pushed the puck up to Triston Grant, who unleashed a shot from outside the Lowell blueline that snuck through the five-hole of Jordan Parise at 4:37.
Powe himself then put Philadelphia up 3-1 at 10:02 of the same period, as he was the benefactor of a scrum in front of the net that resulted in a power play goal. The Phantoms then completed their scoring strike with 3:58 left until the second intermission when Jared Ross skated the puck down the left wing and beat Parise with a snapshot to the top near corner.
The Devils opened the third looking to rally and got back within two goals thanks to an early man-advantage. Petr Vrana opened the play with a point shot that goaltender Brian Boucher stopped with his pad, but Trevor Kell ticked the rebound to Barry Tallackson on the far post for his thirteenth goal of the season. With the assist, Kell extended his point streak (1g, 4a) to four games in his AHL debut.
Lowell got a great opportunity to take the lead in the opening moments of the contest when Powe was assessed a five-minute major for high sticking 3:47 into the first period. The Devils would convert at 6:41 as the rebound from Tallackson's shot lay in the crease for Joe Rooney to bat home. Rooney now has goals in three straight games.
Powe redeemed himself not long after stepping out of the penalty box as he assisted on Frederik Cabana's goal that tied the score 1-1 at 12:43 of the first. The Devils finished 2-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Devils continue their homestand on Friday, January 11 against the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m. The Dracut Lions Club will be collecting new and used eyeglasses at the game for charity. Lowell completes the weekend on Sunday, January 13 at 4:05 p.m. versus the Portland Pirates. Join us for a post-game team autograph session and, after all Sunday home games, a post-game skate presented by Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union.
