Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Durham Bulls, 15-5, on Friday night in front of 8,035 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Durham (41-37, 1-2) put up a 10-spot in the opening frame against Jacksonville (34-43, 2-1) starter Chi Chi González (3-6). Following a flyout, Curtis Mead tripled and was brought home on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, scoring the first run of the game. Osleivis Basabe knocked a single to center and Ben Gamel doubled to plate another run. A throwing error allowed Ruben Cardenas to go to second, while also allowing a pair of runs to cross home. Greg Jones followed with an RBI single. After a strikeout, Nick Dini reached on a hit-by-pitch to put two runners on for Jonathan Aranda, who clubbed a three-run shot, making it 8-0. Mead hit a double and Kyle Manzarno capped off the inning with a two-run home run to give the Bulls a 10-0 advantage.
With two outs in the fourth, the Bulls worked back-to-back walks and Cardenas hit an RBI single. Then, two more consecutive free passes and a hit-by-pitch allowed another pair of runs to score, extending the lead, 13-0.
After Evan McKendry (4-1) worked five scoreless innings, the Jumbo Shrimp scratched across their first run of the contest in the sixth. Xavier Edwards singled, advanced to second on a balk then moved up third on a groundout. Dane Myers hit into a groundout, scoring Edwards from third making the game 14-1.
After Aranda hit a solo shot in the seventh inning to make it 14-1, Jacksonville responded with a four-spot in the home half of the frame. Austin Allen walked, Jordan Groshans singled and Jerar Encarnacion walked to juice the bases. Two batters later, Charles Leblanc ripped an RBI single as each runner moved up a base. Edwards hit into a groundout, but Groshans scored from third. Then, a wild pitch plated Encarnacion. Garrett Hampson followed with a RBI base knock to cut into the Durham lead, 14-5.
The Bulls added a run in the ninth on Basabe's RBI ground out.
