Worcester Red Sox News Release
BUFFALO, NY -Trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Buffalo Bisons (1-2, 35-43) scored two runs in the ninth and five runs in the 10th to take game three of this six-game series with the Worcester Red Sox (2-1, 41-37) by a 10-8 final in walk-off fashion.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th, pinch-hitter Luis De Los Santos lined a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence for a walk-off grand slam to give the Bisons the come-from-behind victory.
Worcester fell behind early, as Buffalo scored three runs in the second inning. Addison Barger homered to center on the first pitch of the inning. After both Rob Brantly and L.J. Talley walked, Tanner Morris lined a double into the right-center field gap to plate a pair and give Buffalo a 3-0 advantage.
The WooSox responded in the fifth inning. With one out and runners at the corners, Max Ferguson drilled a deep fly ball into the left field corner for a sacrifice fly to score Stephen Scott. After a Ceddanne Rafaela infield single, Nick Sogard singled to left to bring in Marcus Wilson. Wilyer Abreu then launched a three-run home run over the right-field fence to put Worcester on top 5-3.
In seven games since his return from the injured list, Abreu has driven in eight runs.
That score held until the ninth inning, when Buffalo plated a pair to tie the game. Rob Brantly led off the frame with a solo home run. Ryan Fernandez struck out the next two hitters. On a 2-2 pitch, Tanner Morris singled to continue the game. Cameron Eden, who is fourth in the IL in steals, pinch ran and stole second base. Nathan Lukes, on another 2-2 pitch, lined a double to score Eden and tie the game. Davis Schneider then singled to left, but Marcus Wilson threw out Lukes at the plate trying to score the game-winning run to force extra innings.
In the 10th, with Rafaela at second and Abreu at first, Daniel Palka lifted a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Worcester in front 8-5.
In his eighth start of the season, Jake Faria tossed five innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Faria walked four and struck out three. He retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.
Brandon Walter, in his first appearance since his major league debut last week, tossed two scoreless and hitless innings following Faria.
The WooSox continue their six-game series with the Bisons tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Rio Gomez is the scheduled starter for Worcester. Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network.
