Iowa Cubs News Release
TACOMA, WA - For the fourth-straight game, the Iowa Cubs (25-43) claimed the first lead but let the edge slip as they dropped a 5-2 contest to the Tacoma Rainiers (37-34), Monday at Cheney Stadium.
It was a scoreless contest through 3.0 as lefties Kyle Ryan - activated from the disabled list today - and former I-Cub Ross Detwiler dueled. The I-Cubs were the first to break through in the fourth as David Bote singled and scored from first on a Taylor Davis double.
Ryan handed the ball to Daury Torrez for the bottom of the fourth after 3.0 one-hit innings and Tacoma jumped on the young righty. After fanning John Andreoli to start the inning, Torrez issued back-to-back walks, followed by back-to-back singles and the Rainiers captured a 2-1 lead.
Iowa knotted the contest in the sixth as Mark Zagunis and Chesny Young cracked singles to open the inning. A groundout from Victor Caratini moved up the runners and another groundout from Bote plated the tying run. Zagunis would end the game with three of Iowa's seven hits.
One swing of the bat pushed Tacoma ahead for good as Seth Mejias-Brean struck a three-run homer, his sixth long ball of the season. Mejias-Brean would end his night with four of Tacoma's five RBI.
Torrez (0-1) carried the I-Cubs through 5.0 relief innings, but took the loss with five runs allowed. Detwiler (1-1) gave up two runs through 6.1 and captured the win, while Shawn Armstrong earned the save.
Iowa and Tacoma wrap the series tomorrow with an 8:05 p.m. CT first pitch at Cheney Stadium. Iowa returns to Principal Park for five games in four days against Colorado Springs beginning Thursday, July 21. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
