Indians Stretch Second No-Hit Bid to Ninth
April 27, 2022 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Pitchers Osvaldo Bido, Cam Vieaux and Eric Hanhold tossed eight no-hit innings until a soft one-out single off the bat of P.J. Higgins in the ninth broke up Indianapolis' bid for a second no-hitter in the last two weeks on Tuesday night. The Indians sealed a 4-0 shutout with just one hit allowed against the Iowa Cubs.
With Yerry De Los Santos on the mound, one out and a runner on first base, Higgins grounded a hit between third baseman Rodolfo Castro and shortstop Oneil Cruz for the I-Cubs (9-9) first and only hit of the night. A diving play by second baseman Ji-Hwan Bae two pitches later and a strikeout of Trent Giambrone completed Indianapolis' first one-hitter since July 24, 2019 at Syracuse.
The Indians (10-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Mason Martin roped his career-high tying fourth triple off Adrian Sampson (L, 0-2) to score Hoy Park from first base. They tacked on another in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Taylor Davis, his first hit of the season.
The game was broken open in the top of the eighth inning when a bases-loaded walk to Travis Swaggerty and sacrifice fly by Davis doubled Indy's score. Martin and Davis each had two hits in the game, with Martin notching a pair of extra-base hits and Davis leading the team with two RBI.
Bido started the game for the Indians and began the no-hit bid with 3.2 innings. He also walked five batters, leading to a season-high nine walks for the team. Vieaux (W, 1-0) followed with 3.0 shutout frames and Hanhold tossed 1.1 innings.
The Indians and I-Cubs will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 1:08 PM ET at Principal Park. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (1-1, 8.18) will take the mound for Indianapolis against RHP Caleb Kilian (0-0, 1.54).
