Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Led by a multi-hit effort by catcher Jason Delay, the Indianapolis Indians attempted a comeback against the Columbus Clippers but ultimately fell short on Tuesday night, 4-2.
The Indians (6-6) notched a season-low tying four hits, half of which came off the bat of Delay. It was his fourth-career two-hit performance in 20 Triple-A games, his last coming on June 16, 2021 vs. Memphis. Three of those four two-hit games have been at Victory Field.
Columbus (10-3) took an early lead in the top of the first inning en route to its ninth consecutive win. An RBI triple off the bat of right fielder Oscar Gonzalez following a two-out walk by lefty Sam Howard (L, 0-1) gave the Clippers the lead, and they extended it on a two-run double by David Fry in the fourth.
Two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning cut the Clippers' lead to one run. The first four batters of the frame reached base safely, with Indy's first run of the day scoring on a fielding error by Fry. With the bases-loaded and no outs, Oneil Cruz hit into a fielder's choice to score Delay. Back-to-back strikeouts by Aaron Pinto (1-1) ended the frame without any further damage to hold onto the lead.
Howard tossed 1.2 innings his first rehab start with Indianapolis and allowed one run on one hit. He retired the last four batters he faced after surrendering the RBI triple.
The Indians will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 1:35 PM ET first pitch. RHP Osvaldo Bido (0-1, 4.91) will toe the rubber for the Indians, and the Clippers will counter with RHP Tobias Myers (0-1, 6.14).
