Durham Bulls News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Durham third baseman Isaac Paredes clubbed his team-leading tenth extra-base hit of the season and reliever Colin Poche continued his dominant start to the season with a scoreless frame, however starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez struck out eight over five-plus scoreless innings while allowing a lone hit, teaming up with four Tides relievers in a 3-0 two-hit shutout victory over Durham on Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Rodriguez (5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO) set down 16 of 18 batters faced, including 15 straight at one point, allowing only a first-inning double to Paredes and one-out walk to CF Cal Stevenson in the sixth. Norfolk relievers Nick Vespi (0.2 IP, SO), Tim Naughton (1.0 IP, 1 H), Matt Vogel (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO), and Cole Uvila (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) combined for the final 4.2 frames, surrendering one hit and one walk.
Rodriguez earned the victory and Uvila notched his first save, while Bulls righty Robert Dugger (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) suffered the defeat. Poche (1.0 IP, 1 SO) retired all three batters he faced, including one strikeout, and has now set down 18 of the 21 batters he has faced this year, including 11 strikeouts.
Norfolk took advantage of a Durham error to grab a 1-0 lead in the third. Martin and Vavra would come through with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-0. The Bulls' best threat came in the first when Paredes doubled and then took third on a groundout, however he was stranded on base and unable to score. Tides LF Robert Neustrom (2-4, 2B) was the only batter from either side to record a multi-hit effort.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Thursday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 12:05pm. RHP Easton McGee is anticipated to start for Durham, with RHP Denyi Reyes expected to get the nod for Norfolk.
Following their six-game series in Norfolk, the Bulls are set to return to the DBAP on Tuesday, April 26th to open a six-game series against the Memphis Redbirds. Tickets for all remaining 2022 home dates at Durham Bulls Athletic Park can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com.
