Harvey Hammers Home Victory for Nailers
January 3, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers are quickly earning the reputation for having excellent success in highly dramatic situations. On Friday night at WesBanco Arena, the home team treated its fans to yet another thrilling finish. At the 20-second mark of overtime, Myles Harvey blasted home the game winning goal, lifting the Nailers to a 3-2 triumph over the Elmira Jackals.
The majority of the scoring came late in this particular contest, and it began with Wheeling's opening tally at the 17:42 mark of the first period. Colin Mulvey led a rush into the offensive zone, putting a shot on goal from the right circle. After his and Max MacKay's shots were thwarted by Scott Greenham, a rebound ultimately kicked out to Mulvey, who found the back of the net from the bottom of the left circle.
The Nailers maintained that lead all the way until the dying seconds of the middle frame, when Elmira netted the equalizer. Christian Ouellet zipped a pass through the bottom of the slot for Matt Carter, who banged in his shot from the right side of the crease. The Jackals' power play goal sent the game into the third period, knotted at one.
At the 5:25 mark of the third, Wheeling went back on top, thanks to some fabulous stick work in front of the goal. Scott Zurevinski's initial shot got kicked away, but the rebound deflected out to Jack MacLellan, who quickly shifted from forehand to backhand, flipping in his second goal in as many games. Less than five minutes later, the visitors drew even, as Rob Bellamy set up Patch Alber, who squeezed a backhander into the cage for a 2-2 tie.
With eight seconds left in the third period, the Nailers earned a power play, as Matt Carter was whistled for tripping. Wheeling needed just 20 seconds in overtime to finish the contest, as Jack MacLellan set up Myles Harvey, who fired a one-time rocket into the right side of the net for a 3-2 win.
Mathieu Corbeil returned from the Utica Comets, and made 34 saves on 36 shots to earn the win for the Nailers, with 28 of his saves coming in the second and third periods. Scott Greenham took the overtime loss for the Jackals, despite stopping 32 of the 35 shots he faced.
The Nailers and Jackals will collide on Saturday in Elmira at 7:05, with Wheeling's next home game taking place on Thursday at 7:00 against Cincinnati.
