Miskovic's OT Winner Lifts Cyclones Past Wings, 2-1
January 3, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
KALAMAZOO, Michigan - Defenseman Zach Miskovic buried his first game-winning goal of the season as the Cincinnati Cyclones (19-9-1-1) rang in 2014 with a 2-1 overtime win over the Kalamazoo Wings (15-11-1-2) in front of 1,913 at Wings Stadium on Friday night.
Kalamazoo drew first blood just 36 seconds into the opening period when Dustin Cloutier netted his first goal of the season, barely beating Joe Howe (W, 29 saves, 4-0-1) through the legs to make it 1-0. Cincinnati answered back, though, at 5:24 when Jack Combs redirected Brett Wysopal's point shot to earn his seventh lamp lighter of 2013-14. The marker extended Combs' goal streak to five games and sent the teams to the first intermission all square at one.
The Wings penalty kill stayed busy in the middle frame, being forced to extinguish three Cyclones power plays including part of a five-minute major to Sam Ftorek. But thanks to some great goaltending by Jordan Binnington (OTL, 34 saves, 10-6-1), the game would head into the third period tied at one.
The final stanza finished like the second, without a goal from either side. As a result, the game was to be decided in overtime. The Cyclones wasted no time in the bonus session getting to work. After Cincinnati had already earned five shots on net in OT, Zach Miskovic caught the puck at the left point and cannoned in his first game-winning goal as a Cyclone to give the visiting club a 2-1 win. It was Cincinnati's ninth win in games that go beyond 60 minutes, good for the ECHL lead.
The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena TOMORROW NIGHT when they host the Reading Royals at 7:30pm. It will be the annual Throwback Night and Teddy Bear Toss! Fans can purchase seats for just $8 while enjoying $1 beers, pizza, hot dogs, and soda! Plus, when the Cyclones score their first goal, fans are encouraged to throw stuffed toys on the ice to be collected and donated to the Cincinnati Police Department! There will also be a post-game jersey auction, as the Cyclones will be wearing vintage Cincinnati Swords sweaters! Tickets are on sale now! Call 513.421.PUCK or visit CyclonesHockey.com to secure your seats. Fans can also get the latest team updates throughout the season on Facebook and Twitter (@CincyCyclones).
