Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced two transactions, with both taking effect immediately. Wheeling has received goaltender Mathieu Corbeil from the Utica Comets, while releasing goaltender Alex Westlund.

Corbeil, 22, appeared in four games between the pipes for the Nailers prior to his recall, including a memorable debut. After suiting up in six games with the CHL's St. Charles Chill, Mathieu took his position with Wheeling on November 30th, and turned away all 39 shots he faced, shutting out the Toledo Walleye, 3-0 at WesBanco Arena. In his next outing, the Montreal, QC native made five more saves, extending his shutout streak, which ultimately ended at 87:29. Finally, Corbeil stopped 19 of 21 shots, leading the Nailers to a 3-2 overtime win against Evansville on December 21st. Mathieu was with Utica for three games, but did not see any time in goal.

Westlund, 38, appeared in two games with the Nailers, suffering an 0-2-0 record, despite stopping 58 of the 63 shots he faced. Alex made his season debut with Wheeling on December 27th, making 32 saves against Gwinnett, before following that up with a 26-save effort in South Carolina. The Flemington Village, NJ native became the second oldest player to ever appear in a game with the Nailers/Thunderbirds, with his final contest taking place on his 38th birthday. Since leaving the Nailers, Westlund has signed with Medvescak Zagreb of the KHL.

The Wheeling Nailers will play a home-and-home series against the Elmira Jackals this weekend, beginning on Friday night at WesBanco Arena, with face-off set for 7:00.
