CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gwinnett Gladiators scored the final three goals of the game after trailing 3-1 to defeat the Charlotte Checkers 4-3 Thursday night in front of 4,591 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
Gwinnett got on the board first with a goal by Matt York, but Charlotte answered with a charge led by Hugh Jessiman's two goals. Rory Rawlyk scored on a power play to give the Checkers a 3-1 lead as the teams went to the first intermission.
Gwinnett chipped away at the Checkers lead getting a goal from Guiallaume Desbiens in the second period and then tied the game on a power play goal by Derek Nesbitt early in the third period. With the score tied 3-3 and the Checkers on the power play, Gwinnett stole the puck in the neutral zone during a Checkers line change and the number one star of the game, Pascal Pelletier, scored the game winner at the 16:05 mark.
The Checkers scored on two-of-five power plays and unleashed 17 shots with the man advantage, while the Gladiators scored on their only shot during three power play chances.
Chad Collins picked up the win for Gwinnett stopping 32-of-35 shots. Charlotte's Chris Holt, who was just reassigned to Charlotte today by the New York Rangers, made 24 saves.
Desbiens earned the number two star of the game for Gwinnett (10-5-2), while Charlotte's Jessiman was the game's third star.
The Checkers (9-8-1) are back in action tomorrow night hosting the South Carolina Stingrays and will travel to Pensacola on Saturday to face the Ice Pilots. For more information, or tickets, call the Checkers Front Office at 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
