Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings were in Boise, Idaho tonight to play the first of five games at Qwest Arena this season, and they beat the Steelheads 4-2.

Salmon Kings Goaltender Rob McVicar who was assigned to Victoria yesterday, was activated this morning and ready in time to get his first start of the season. The Steelheads jumped at an opportunity early in the first period when Scott Burt potted his fifth goal of the season, just 1:50 into the opening period.

At 14:52 of the second period Victoria's powerplay was able to solve Steelheads Netminder Steve Silverthorn for the first time, when Defenseman Nate Forster teed up the puck from just outside the slot and beat Silverthorn for his second of the season, to tie the game at one.

After a scoreless second period the teams stepped back on the ice and the floodgates opened. Scott Burt lit the lamp for his third goal of the year at 1:52 of the third period, and the Steelheads had jumped out to the 2-1 lead. CCM Tacks November Player of the Month Garett Bembridge, looked to stretch the lead to 3-1 for the Steelheads, but the official lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead before realizing it had slipped past McVicar and over the goal-line.

The Salmon Kings took the bounce in stride and turned the play on Idaho who was already deflated from their tough luck. Forward Dustan Heintz picked up a juicy turnover in the Steelheads zone and walked in on Silverthorn beating the goalie in close to tie the game at two, at 4:31. The goal was Heintz' fifth of the year and ninth point in nine consecutive games.

Just over a minute later Forwards Seth Leonard and Lanny Gare broke out on a Salmon Kings two on one. Leonard threaded the needle to Gare who recorded his seventh goal of the campaign, as he tapped it past Silverthorn to quickly give Victoria the 3-2 lead. McVicar came up big-time late in the game while shorthanded, making two stops, first with his leg pad and then he made a huge blocker save, off the second shot from the slot.

Entering into the game the Salmon Kings were 5-0-1 when Adam Taylor scores a goal and he assured Victoria's win when fired the puck from just outside his blueline into the centre of the Steelheads net, to give to the Salmon Kings the 4-2 win.

Victoria finished the game 1-3 on the powerplay and killed all four man advantages they gave the Steelheads. The Steelheads out-shot the Salmon Kings 32-22 in front of 3747 in attendance.

The Salmon Kings play the Steelheads in Boise again on Friday and Saturday night. Victoria returns home on Sunday and will have four days off before hosting the West Division leading Alaska Aces starting Friday December 16, 2005.
