SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls look to close out their season-long seven-game homestand with another win and stretch their unbeaten streak to six when they host the Phoenix Roadrunners Friday night at the ipayOne Center
SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Roadrunners have met three times so far this season with Phoenix holding a 2-1-0 series edge. The two teams square off three more times during the regular season, including twice in San Diego.
2005-06 HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES:
10/28/05 San Diego 2 @ Phoenix 4
10/29/05 San Diego 1 @ Phoenix 7
11/13/05 Phoenix 1 @ San Diego 2
VS. WEST DIVISION: The Gulls are 2-5-0 this season against the West Division and 1-1-0 at home.
LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (NOV. 13 VS. PHOENIX): Phoenix shut out San Diego on the power play, but the Gulls found a way to win anyway, 2-1, for their first home win of the season. San Diego spent nearly a full period with the man advantage (17:11), including four separate two-man advantages, but still couldn't score on 13 total opportunities. As it turned out, the Gulls didn't need to after starting goaltender Tom Lawson stopped 20 shots. Jesse Bennefield and Guillaume Fournier scored San Diego's goals - both in the second period - to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead entering the final period. San Diego out-shot the Roadrunners 36-21 for its first-ever win over Phoenix after the Roadrunners won the previous two meetings on Oct. 28 and 29.
GULLS UPDATE: San Diego (8-7-4) enters the day with 20 points, tied for second in the Pacific Division with the Long Beach Ice Dogs and five points back of the first-place Fresno Falcons... The Gulls, however, have two games in hand on Long Beach... San Diego and Long Beach are both two points ahead of the fourth-place Bakersfield Condors... The Gulls dropped their last decision Sunday against Johnstown in a shootout, but are unbeaten in regulation in five straight games (3-0-2) and 11 of their last 13 overall (7-2-4)... In those 13 games, seven have been decided by one goal and four have been decided by two goals... Six of the one-goal decisions ended in overtime or a shootout... Tonight is the last of a season-long seven-game homestand... San Diego is 5-1-3 at home this season (3-1-2 on the homestand)...
OTHER NOTES: Richard Keyes is in the midst of a five-game assist streak and has 10 points during that span (3g, 7a)... Steve Hildenbrand has scored a point in four straight games and eight of the last nine. He has 16 points during that span (5g, 11a)... Rookie Cody McLeod has five points (2g, 3a) in two games since coming off the injured list... Fournier has scored a point in 11 of the last 13 games... The "French Fries" line of Fournier, Pierre-Luc Sleigher and Martin Mandeville have been held off the scoresheet once in the last 13 games (Nov. 27 vs. Fresno). The trio has combined for 31 points (13g, 18a) during that span... San Diego has killed 56 of its last 62 penalties (90.3 percent) and has scored a power-play goal in 10 of its last 13 games (19 power-play tallies in that span)... The Gulls, however, are 0-for-33 with the man advantage against Phoenix this season...
PHOENIX UPDATE: Phoenix (6-10-2) starts the day last in the West Division with 14 points, three behind the fifth-place Victoria Salmon Kings... The Roadrunners are 18 points behind the front-running Alaska Aces... Phoenix has won three of its last five games (3-2-0), but prior to that was winless in eight straight games (0-6-2)... The Roadrunners, in the midst of a four-game road trip, have played 12 of their first 16 games at home... Cory Pecker is tied for 11th in the ECHL with 22 points (10g, 12a). He has five points in three games (3g, 2a) against San Diego this season... The Roadrunners are 6-for-15 on the power play against the Gulls this season (40 percent)...
TRANSACTIONS: Goaltender Aaron McKenzie was activated from the 30-day injured list today... Netminder Tom Lawson was recalled to the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters Tuesday... Defenseman Evan Shaw was acquired Monday from Columbia and placed on team suspension Tuesday... Defensemen Andy Thompson (wrist) and Doug MacIver (knee) both remain on the seven-day injured reserve... Forward Frantisek Skladany and defenseman Tomas Slovak both remain with Lowell...
