CHARLOTTE, NC â The East Coast Hockey League's Greenville Grrrowl beat the Charlotte Checkers 4-2 on the road Sunday. The win was their 40th of the season and moved them to within four points of the Southeast Division championship and to within three of home-ice advantage in the first round of the ECHL's Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Grrrowl entered the game with a postseason spot already clinched by virtue of the Pee Dee Pride beating the Augusta Lynx 4-2 earlier in the day.
After a scoreless first period; despite four power plays, two apiece, and 22 shots on goal; Charlotte's Layne Ulmer opened the scoring with his 15th goal of the season 6:11 into the second period on assists from Kurt Seher and Konrad McKay, but the Grrrowl tied the game at 1-1 on Ryan Stewart's 14th goal of the year at 12:38 on assists from David Bell and Eric Lind.
Charlotte regained the lead at 2-1 on a power-play goal by Kevin Hilton, his 25th goal of the season, at 16:11 on assists from Dave Duerden and Ulmer, but the Grrrowl again tied it, this time at 2-2, with a power-play goal by Zdenek Blatny, his second power-play goal in as many games and third goal of the year, at 18:10 on assists from Luke Sellars and Ryan Stewart.
Blatny gave their Grrrowl their first lead of the game at 3-2 with 2:48 left in third period with his second goal of the game, his fourth of the year, on assists from newcomer Jeff Dessner and Jonathan Roy. Blatny stickhandled around the entire Charlotte zone before rifling a shot past Checkers netminder Jason LaBarbera and just under the crossbar. Bell added an insurance goal, his fourth of the season, into the empty net while the Grrrowl were on the power play with assists from Stewart and Roger Trudeau with at 19:24.
The Grrrowl were 2 for 5 on the power play, 5 for 6 on the penalty kill and outshot Charlotte 37-35 for their 11th straight shots on goal advantage and 13th in the last 14 games.
The Grrrowl will host the Pee Dee Pride Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. and the Columbus Cottonmouths Friday at 7:05 p.m. They will finish the 2001-2002 regular season with a pair of road games next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. versus the Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays and Sunday at 4 p.m. against Columbus.
