Brass netminder named ECHL Goalie of the Week

(3/25/02) Paxton Schafer of the New Orleans Brass is the East Coast Hockey League's Goalie of the Week. Schafer won three consecutive games last week, including back-to-back shutouts, to move the Brass within one win of clinching a spot in the 2002 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Schafer put up spectacular numbers: a 3-0 record, 0.33 goals-against average, .987 save percentage and two shutouts. Schafer and the Brass broke the team record for longest shutout streak. By not allowing a goal for 149 minutes and 15 seconds, Schafer and his teammates eclipsed the previous record of 145:07 set by Ron Vogel and Alexei Volkov in February, 2001. The Brass set another team record with an overall total of six shutouts this season: three by Ron Vogel, two by Schafer and one by Sean Matile.

Schafer's work came in three consecutive nights. On Friday, Schafer made 23 saves in a 1-0 win at Mississippi. On Saturday, Schafer again stopped 23 shots in a 5-0 whitewash of Schafer's former team, the Baton Rouge Kingfish. On Sunday, Schafer made 25 saves and allowed just one power-play goal in a 3-1 win against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.

Schafer and the Brass can clinch a playoff spot on Wednesday night (Fan Appreciation Night) when the Mobile Mysticks visit the New Orleans Arena. Game time is 7:05pm. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster ticket centers and the Louisiana Superdome Box Office. To charge by phone, please call (504) 522-5555.
