March 25, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons swept a pair of games from the Anchorage Aces this past weekend and opened up a five-point lead in the battle for third place in the Southern Division over the Bakersfield Condors.
Four different Falcons scored in a 4-1 win on Friday night, including Jason Weaver, who became the fifth Fresno player this season to eclipse the 20-goal plateau. The first sell-out crowd of the year greeted the team on Saturday night and was treated to a 6-2 victory. The game was tied at two until Brad Both scored the first of four unanswered goals with six minutes left in the second period. Joe Frederick picked up his 29th and 30th goals in the contest, and goaltender David Mitchell played brilliantly, stopping 38 of 40 shots on goal.
The two wins pushed the Falcons above the .500 mark at home for the first time this season at 15-14-3 and to within one game of the break-even point overall at 28-29-8. Their 64 points are five more than the third-place Condors with two games in hand.
THREE WITH THE GOLD KINGS
The Falcons finish a stretch of 10 games in a row against the Northern Division with three straight versus the Colorado Gold Kings this week. Fresno welcomes Colorado to Selland Arena on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m. as they complete a five-game home stand. All ladies gain admission for just $5 courtesy of Colby and Co. and Corona. Tickets are still available at the Selland Arena Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Both clubs will then fly to Colorado Springs on Thursday and finish their regular season series with games on Friday and Saturday.
Live play-by-play of all three games may be heard on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat. Wednesday's Coors Light Pre-game Show kicks off at 6:50 p.m. and Friday and Saturday's starts at 5:50 p.m.
MURPHY TOPS AMONG DEFENSEMEN
After notching a pair of assists over the weekend, Cory Murphy is the highest scoring defenseman in the league. The second-year Falcon has 10 goals and a league-leading among defensemen 41 assists for 51 points. He is one point away from matching his career high of 52 points set last year. His performance also marks the sixth time in franchise history a blue-liner has broken the 50-point barrier. Former Falcon Bob Wilkie holds the team's single season point record for defensemen with 63 during the 1997-98 campaign.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Fresno is taking today off and will practice tomorrow at Gateway Ice Center at 11:15 a.m. They will hit the ice on Wednesday morning at Selland Arena at 10 a.m.
