Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The ECHL announced the playing schedule for the 2006-07 regular season today and the Gwinnett Gladiators will look to defend their American Conference Championship when the season opens on Friday, October 20th at the Arena at Gwinnett Center against the South Carolina Stingrays. The complete schedule follows this release.

The Gladiators family-friendly schedule will again feature 26 weekend games, the same number as last season, with eight (8) Friday night games, 12 games scheduled for Saturday and six (6) on Sunday.

The Gladiators schedule is highlighted by a pair of games against the 2006 Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces. Alaska defeated the Gladiators in five games in the Kelly Cup Finals to capture the ECHL league championship. The Gladiators will look for revenge against the Aces when Alaska visits Gwinnett on January 30th and February 3rd.

Other games of note include the Gladiators traditional Thanksgiving Game which will feature the Charlotte Checkers, The Gladiators MLK Kids Day Educational Day Game on January 15th against Augusta and a Gladiators First - an election eve game on Monday, November 6th.

In addition, the Johnstown Chiefs, one of the five original members of the ECHL during the league's inaugural 1988-89 season, will make their first ever appearance at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on December 5th. Gwinnett will also face Reading, Dayton and Wheeling for the first time in Gladiators team history during a North Division road trip that begins on November 29th.

Gwinnett will face in state rival Augusta nine (9) times during the season and rival Florida ten (10) times. In addition, the Texas Wildcatters return to the ice for the 2006-07 season after suspending operations following the Gulf Coast Hurricanes. The Wildcatters first visit to the Arena at Gwinnett Center is scheduled for November 6th.

The ECHL takes its annual midseason break in January for the Rbk Hockey ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 17 and Rbk Hockey Skills Competition on Jan. 16 hosted by the Steelheads at Qwest Arena.

The 2006-07 ECHL division and conference alignments and the format for the 2007 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced following the Preseason Board of Governors Meeting in September. The meetings will be presided by Gladiators president Steve Chapman who was elected the Chairman of the ECHL Board of Governors in June.

The Gwinnett Gladiators open their fourth season as a proud member of the ECHL in October of 2006 - season tickets are on sale now.
