Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today the release of their 2006-07 schedule which includes 30 weekend dates. The announcement was made by Jeff Longo, President of the Checkers, from the team's office on Tryon Street.
The Checkers will play 72 games during the regular season spanning from October 20, 2006 to April 7, 2007. The Checkers return to play 36 home games at Charlotte Bobcats Arena and 36 games on the road. The Checkers noted that their schedule is likely to undergo some revisions when the official NBA schedule is released later this summer.
"With the understanding that there will likely be date changes once the NBA schedule is released later this summer, we are excited with the early potential for an increase in home weekend dates and a less-taxing road schedule," said Longo.
Highlighting the Checkers home schedule are 12 Friday games, 15 Saturday games and three Sunday games. Charlotte's 30 weekend dates is up almost 40 percent from last season when the team had 21 weekend dates, including five Sundays. Rounding out the home schedule are six Wednesday games.
The Checkers will begin their 14th season in the ECHL at home Friday, October 20th against the Wheeling Nailers. The Checkers schedule includes first-time Charlotte opponent Cincinnati, which returns to the ice following its voluntary suspension. The ECHL will also welcome the Texas Wildcatters back to action after the team was forced to suspend operations during the 2005-06 season due to the effects of Hurricane Rita.
The Checkers will travel to Beaumont, Texas to face the Wildcatters during their longest road trip of the season. The road trip begins on December 5th against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. The Checkers will then travel to Texas for three games in three days with the Wildcatters before heading back to Pensacola for the final game of the stretch on December 12th.
The Checkers close out the season with 10 home games in March and two home games in the first week of April.
Charlotte will once again play a schedule full of matchups with their border-state rival teams the Columbia Inferno and South Carolina Stingrays. The Checkers will face Columbia 10 times (5 home, 5 away) and South Carolina 11 times (6 home, 5 away). The Checkers will square off nine times with the Augusta Lynx, Florida Everblades, Gwinnett Gladiators and Pensacola Ice Pilots.
The Charlotte Checkers will begin their second season of play in Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season ticket packages are on sale now. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call the Checkers front office at 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
