Worcester Red Sox News Release

MOOSIC, P.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (44-36) put up three runs in the top of the eleventh inning to push past the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (48-29), a 5-3 victory on Thursday night at PNC Field.

After each team went scoreless in the tenth, the WooSox came to the plate in the top of the eleventh with Joey Meneses as the automatic runner on second. Josh Ockimey led off with a walk, and after a strikeout, Jhonny Pereda cracked a single up the middle to score Meneses, the go-ahead-and eventual game-winning-run. Worcester, who had three total hits in the game entering the frame, added RBI singles from pinch-hitting Chad De La Guerra and Ryan Fitzgerald to cap off a three-run eleventh.

Seth Blair (2-0) allowed a run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning, but closed out the victory with a groundout, giving the WooSox their third extra-innings win of the season.

Nearly four hours earlier, the RailRiders broke through first against Worcester starter Raynel Espinal, beginning the bottom of the first with an Andrew Velazquez one-out walk. Velazquez stole second, then came home on an RBI single from Donny Sands.

SWB's 1-0 lead held until the top of the third, when the WooSox put two on with a Yairo Muñoz single-a knock that extended his hit streak to 27 games-and a walk from Jeremy Rivera. Joey Meneses came up next, and in his Worcester debut, delivered a game-tying RBI single to left.

In the bottom of the frame, the RailRiders regained the lead. Cristian Perez doubled, got to third on a throwing error and then scored on a Velazquez RBI single to make it 2-1. That was the final run allowed by Espinal, who tossed six innings of two-run ball and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.

Two innings later, a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases for Jeter Downs with one out. Downs saw six pitches, worked the count to 3-2 and let ball four go by for a run-scoring walk to tie the game at two.

Behind Espinal, Kevin McCarthy added a scoreless seventh, Kaleb Ort did the same in the eighth and ninth and Blair tossed up a runless tenth before Worcester grabbed the lead for good in the eleventh.

The WooSox continue the six-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Radio coverage starts live at 6:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
