Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM - Bulls right fielder Josh Lowe collected three hits, including a run-scoring double, and right-hander Chris Ellis struck out nine over five and two-thirds innings, however Redbirds starting pitcher Zack Thompson tossed a quality outing and second baseman Nolan Gorman homered in Memphis' 3-1 win over Durham on Thursday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Lowe (3-4, 2B, RBI) recorded three of the Bulls' six hits, including his RBI double in the opening frame that put Durham ahead 1-0. Gorman would then leave the yard with a solo shot in the fourth as part of a two-run fourth inning to make it 2-1. After Durham threatened in the last of the eighth but were unable to bring another tally across, Memphis 3B Rayder Ascanio would cap the game's scoring with a run-scoring single in the ninth to extend the margin to two.
Thompson (6.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 5 K) earned the victory with six strong innings, while Jesus Cruz (1.0 IP, H, 2 K), Junior Fernandez (1.0 IP, H, BB, 3 K) and Grant Black (1.0 IP, H) combined for the final three frames, with Black notching his first save. Ellis suffered the defeat after yielding two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in 5.2 frames, adding a season-high nine punchouts. Bulls southpaw Adam Conley (2.0 IP, 2 H, K) added two scoreless innings of support.
The two teams are set to face off again on Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm ET. Durham's starting pitcher has not yet been announced, while Memphis is anticipated to turn to RHP Johan Oviedo (1-1, 5.68). Tickets for that game, as well as all remaining Bulls home games are available and can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com.
