Saints Fall in Epic Pitcher's Duel 1-0 to Bats
August 5, 2021 - International League (IL)
St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints had the 10th best prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization starting in Drew Strotman. The Louisville Bats, however, had the third best prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization and 47th best prospect in all of baseball in Hunter Greene on the mound. The matchup lived up to the billing as there were a total of six hits in the game as the Saints lost 1-0 on Thursday night in front of a season high 10,022.
The lone run came in the second as Braxton Lee walked with one out and scored on Jan Hernandez' RBI double.
That was all the scoring as Strotman worked 5.0 solid innings allowing one run on four hits while walking three and striking out three.
On the other side Greene, he of the 103+ mile per hour fastball, was dominant. The Saints got one runner to third and that came in the second when Jimmy Kerrigan walked with one out. He stole second and moved to third on a groundout, but Drew Maggi fouled out to end the inning.
Greene didn't give up a hit until a one out single in the fourth off the bat of Nick Gordon. Gilberto Celestino, however, grounded into a double play to end the inning. Greene went 6.1 shutout innings allowing one hit while walking one and striking out 10.
The Saints bullpen was perfect in their 4.0 innings of work as Jovani Moran went 2.2 perfect innings and struck out four.
The only other hit for the Saints came in the seventh following Greene's departure. Major League rehabber Lucas Sims came in and gave up a single to right to Mark Contreras. Contreras advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Sims would get Kerrigan to fly out and Ben Rortvedt to strike out looking to end the inning.
Edgar Garcia finished off the night for the Saints going 1.1 perfect innings and striking out one.
The same two teams meet in game four of the six-game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Chandler Shepherd (5-5, 6.41) to the mound against Bats RHP Michael Mariot (2-3, 3.91). The game can be seen on FOX 9+ and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
