Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones (21-16-1-2) open the week as the co-leaders of the North Division of the American Conference of the ECHL. The club will face a stern challenge this week, as three games will be played against teams within two points of it in the divisional standings. The good news? All three of those important games will be played at U.S. Bank Arena--where the Cyclones have a 13-6-0-2 record (.667 winning percentage).
INSIDE THE BIG GAMES: The Reading Royals come to Cincinnati on Wednesday night (Jan. 31), on a Wet Wednesday--where fans have the opportunity to purchase one dollar beers all night. Reading is in fifth place and a victory over Cincinnati would give the Royals a share of first place in the division. Friday night (Feb. 2), the Trenton Titans are in for a 7:30pm tilt. Trenton is tied with the Cyclones for the North lead and the first 1000 kids age 14 and under will receive Thundersticks to celebrate the evening, courtesy of the Cincinnati Plastic Surgery Group. After a Saturday night (Feb. 2) game at Wheeling, the club returns to U.S. Bank Arena for a noon showdown with Trenton. That is a Family Day game, where for $44--fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four soft drinks. Tickets must be purchased in advance of game day to take advantage of this special.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Cyclones game Wednesday night (Jan. 31), will end a five-game road trip that saw the club away from U.S. Bank Arena for 19 days--the longest stretch of the season. The friendly confines of USBA has been good for the Cyclones, as the club is 13-6-0-2 on home ice--the fourth-best home winning percentage in the ECHL.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: The Cyclones dropped a pair of games last week, starting on Friday night (Jan. 26), in a 4-2 defeat at Wheeling. Sam Ftorek and Cory Urquhart collected the goals. Saturday night (Jan. 27), Cedrick Desjardins was solid in goal, stopping 26 shots, but losing a 1-0 thriller at Dayton. Adam Berkhoel stopped all 29 shots he faced in collecting the victory.
NATURAL BORN KILLERS: The Cyclones lead the ECHL in penalty killing at 89.2 percent. Cincinnati has killed off 77 of the last 80 shorthanded situations (96.3 percent) since Dec. 28. The club has eliminated the last 18 man-disadvantage situations it has faced (171 minutes, 56 seconds), since allowing a five-on-three goal to Toledo on Jan. 19. Other than that score, Cincinnati has permitted one power play goal in the last 43 chances (97.7 percent penalty kill). That is one two-man advantage goal allowed in the last 354 minutes and 45 seconds--or, nearly six games.
THE VIEW TO A KILL: The Cyclones have been stellar in penalty killing on the road at 90.2 percent (129-of-143) and solid at home at 88.1 percent (126-of-143)--tops in the ECHL in both of those statistical categories. Cincinnati has yielded 31 power play goals, four fewer than Charlotte (35)--which has allowed the second-fewest number of power play goals.
QUICK SHOTS: Cory Urquhart is tied for the ECHL lead in game winning goals with five...Jimmy Bonneau has been involved in 14 fights this season, fourth-most in the ECHL...Cedrick Desjardins is third in the ECHL in goals against average at 2.36...Desjardins' four shutouts are tied for the league lead...Conrad Martin's three shorthnaded assists are most among rookies and defensemen...The Cyclones are ninth in the league in penalty minutes at 23.2 per game...The Cyclones have 44 major penalties, fourth-most in the ECHL.
A LOOK DOWN THE ROAD: The Cyclones have 32 games remaining this season. Of those games, 15 will be played at U.S. Bank Arena. Cincinnati has eight games left with division co-leader Trenton, six with Johnstown and six against teams outside of the North Division, four with Reading and four with Wheeling. Three games remain with Dayton and one is left with Toledo. Those 32 opponents have a combined record of 606-531-138 (.529 winning percentage)
THE DEFENSE DOES NOT REST: Cincinnati's defense ranks as third-best in the ECHL, yielding 2.50 goals per game. The Cyclones allow the sixth-fewest shots on goal per game at 30.93. During the five game road trip over the past two-plus weeks, the Cyclones allowed eleven goals (2.2 per game average) and limited the opposition to just 156 shots (31.2 per game). Cincinnati has choked opponents worse at home, surrendering 42 goals at home (2.00 per game) and giving up 663 shots (31.57 per game). Thirteen times this season Cincinnati has given up one goal or less and 15 times the squad has permitted 30 or fewer shots in a game.
BEST OF TIMES, WORST OF TIMES: Since the Cyclones lost a season-worst five consecutive games from Nov. 4-16, the club has bounced back with a 17-9-3 record over the next 28 games (.638 winning percentage).
DICKMANN'S MONDAY NIGHT!: On Mondays, Head Coach Chuck Weber and selected players will be at Dickmann's Sports Cafe (479 Orphanage Rd., Ft. Wright, KY) from 7-8pm.
