Dayton Bombers News Release
Johnstown, PA- By defeating the Johnstown Chiefs 3-1 at Cambia County War Memorial Arena on Sunday afternoon, the Dayton Bombers improved their record in afternoon games this season to 3-1-0.
The Bombers traveled to Johnstown for the second time in as many weeks. The last time they were there, they came from behind and won 6-3 thanks to four third period goals. They wouldn't need to come from behind in Sunday's game as they jumped out to an early lead in the opening period of play.
Justin Maiser was pinned to the boards by one of the Chiefs defenseman in the neutral zone. But Maiser used his body to push the puck up to teammate Yannick Tifu who fed a perfect pass to the crashing Matt Herneisen to beat Chiefs starter Gerald Coleman at the 14:35 mark to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Rookie Dan LaCosta made his 6th start of the season in goal for the Bombers and stopped all 11 Chiefs shots in the first to give Dayton the one goal lead after one period of play.
After not receiving a power play at all in the first period, the Bombers made the Chiefs pay with their first power play opportunity in the second period. Brent Walton would score his team leading 5th power play goal of the season by lifting a Coleman rebound up under the crossbar on the backhand to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead at the 2:13 mark in the second. Four minutes later however, the Chiefs cut the lead back to one when leading scorer Randy Rowe slid home a rebound at the 6:13 mark of the second. The Bombers held onto the 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
In the third it didn't take long for the Bombers to quiet the Chiefs crowd once again and regain a two goal advantage. Joe Cullen was parked right in front of the net on the power play and tipped home a perfect shot from the point by Brad Farynuk to give the Bombers a 3-1 lead at the 1:29 mark of the third period. As they have done all season long the Bombers defense along with LaCosta in goal shut down the Chiefs and any hopes of a comeback to come away with the 3-1 road victory.
LaCosta was very solid throughout and stopped 25 of 26 shots on the night to earn his second victory in six starts with the Bombers. Both Justin Maiser and Brad Farynuk each had two points to spark the offense and lead the Bombers to a division best road record of 11-7-2 with the victory. With the win, the Bombers improve to 20-12-4 on the season and move into 3rd place in the North division, only one point behind the 1st place Trenton Titans and 2nd place Cincinnati Cyclones.
