MARY KAY AND PINK AT THE RINK BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The following information was researched and copied from the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation website at www.mkacf.org.
Mary Kay Ash
Business executive
Born: 1915
Birthplace: Hot Wells, Texas
Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, one of the largest beauty products firms in the United States, Ash sold a child psychology book door to door in the late 1930s and then was a sales representative and manager at the Stanley Home Products Co. from 1939 to 1952. Later, she was national training director at the World Gift Co. In 1963, with $5,000, she founded Mary Kay Cosmetics in a Dallas storefront. The firm sold products door to door using nine saleswomen, called "beauty consultants." The business grew steadily, helped by Ash's positive philosophy and her generous use of incentives, such as free pink Cadillacs and diamond jewelry, for successful sales people. With over 1.5 salespeople in 32 countries, the firm remains a major presence in the competitive beauty market. She was married three times and had a daughter and two sons. Died: 2001
MARY KAY'S QUEST FOR THE CURE
Virtually everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. Maryà Kay's personal encounter came in 1980 when her husband, Mel Ash, died of lung cancer. Subsequently, each time a member of the extended Mary Kay family was diagnosed, she became even more determined to work to find a cure. In 1987, Mary Kay decided to put her money where her heart was and asked the independent sales force and employees at Mary Kay Inc. to do the same. Together they began raising funds for cancer research, and in 1996, the Maryà Kay Ash Charitable Foundation was established to formalize the raising and distributing of research funds for cancers affecting women.

MKACF
"We are committed to eliminating cancers affecting women by supporting top medical scientists who are searching for a cure for breast, uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers." This year, 211,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, the most common type among women, excluding skin cancer. Another 80,000 women will be diagnosed with a cancer of the reproductive organs. According to the American Cancer Society, one-third of all women will face a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetimes. Fortunately, the odds of recovery today have increased dramatically, thanks to the medical advances and scientific breakthroughs that philanthropies such as the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation are helping to support.
MKACF
"We are committed to ending the epidemic of violence against women by providing grants to women's shelters and supporting community outreach programs." Mary Kay Ash believed that motivation, recognition and an unlimited opportunity could transform women, empowering them to achieve better lives for themselves and their families. Sadly, one in three women in the U.S. today will be the victim of violence during her lifetime. Domestic violence, rape, stalking and murder threaten and destroy women's dreams, their families and, too often, their lives. Since 2000, the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation has awarded millions of dollars to women's shelters across the country. In 2005, the Foundation distributed $20,000 grants to 150 shelters. And again in 2006, the Foundation awarded $20,000 grants, totaling $3 million, to 150 shelters in all 50 states.
History of Pink at the Rink with Mary Kay
by John Tull
In March of 2004 while I was the president of the Motor City Mechanics Hockey Team in Fraser Michigan (Detroit area), I was lucky enough to meet many hockey fans who were also part of the local Mary Kay Cosmetics Sales Community. I created an event to raise money for their foundation, the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. I suggested that the Mechanics wear pink jerseys and that we auction them off for the MKACF. At the time the NHL was locked out and there was no NHL season, so my team, the Mechanics, signed Detroit Red Wings Chris Chelios and Derian Hatcher, Ottawa Senator (now a Blackhawk) Bryan Smolinski, and LA King Sean Avery to play on our team. All of these NHL players wore the Pink Mechanics Jerseys that night in the inaugural Pink at the Rink with Mary Kay and the Mechanics. The Mechanics raised more than $ 15,000 for the MKACF during this first Pink at the Rink with Mary Kay jersey auction. The Fresno Falcons are proud to wear pink on February 3 and hope to raise more than $ 20,000.00.
