Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (59-56) homered their way to a third straight win over the Rochester Red Wings (51-64), a 9-3 victory on Friday night in front of 7,949 at Polar Park.
Brayan Bello was strong in his rehab start for the WooSox, tossing 4.1 innings of one-run ball. In 80 pitches, the right-hander struck out five and walked two. Rochester's lone run came three batters in on an RBI single from John Nogowski-Bello responded by retiring 10 of the next 11 batters, walking a single man in that span.
For the second straight night, Worcester's offense was powered by the long ball. Connor Wong gave the WooSox the lead in the second with his second homer in as many days, a 412-foot, two-run shot to the berm in left.
An inning later, Franchy Cordero delivered the swing of the night, an opposite-field grand slam to left-center that went 423 feet. Cordero, who homered twice on Thursday night, now has four long balls since being optioned to Triple-A on August 2.
Both teams plated runs in the seventh-Rochester grabbed two against Worcester reliever Durbin Feltman on a Nogowski sac-fly and a wild pitch. The WooSox responded with a screaming solo homer from Abraham Almonte, a 110 mile-per-hour line drive that just slipped inside the right field foul pole.
Cordero added his fifth and final RBI of the night in the eighth with a single through the left side, plating Pedro Castellanos. Almonte batted next, and he knocked a single in the same spot to make it 9-3 Worcester, capping off a three-hit night for both hitters at the top of the home team's lineup.
On the mound, the WooSox received scoreless relief appearances from winner Caleb Simpson (1-2), Zack Kelly-who slipped out of a bases loaded jam with a lineout double play-and Kaleb Ort.
The WooSox continue the six-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. at Polar Park against the Rochester Red Wings, affiliate of the Washington Nationals. On the mound, Victor Santos (0-2, 15.95) faces Cade Cavalli (5-4, 3.82). Radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television is live on NESN+.
