IronPigs Nab Seesaw Win Over Bisons, 8-7
August 19, 2022 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
In a wild game that featured a combined 22 hits and six errors, the IronPigs used a Josh Ockimey sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to top the Bisons, 8-7, Friday night at Sahlen Field.
Before the fireworks delighted a crowd of 9,452, the Buffalo faithful watched a contest that featured five lead changes. The final one, however, went the way of the IronPigs. Dalton Guthrie's chopper through the right side of the Herd infield got the rally going. A stolen base and a infield single from Yario Munoz allowed Guthrie to get in position to easily score when Ockimey drove left fielder Spencer Horwitz back with the sac fly.
A back-and-forth affair had the Bisons and IronPigs tied at seven through the first eight innings of play. A two-run single from Vinny Capra in the first inning was matched by solo home runs from Lehigh Vallye's Will Toffey and Guthrie in the first and third innings respectively.
Down 3-2, the Bisons took the lead back in the fifth thanks to a IronPig fielding error and a booming RBI-triple by Zack Collins. Toffey's second home run of the game in the sixth tied the score at fourth.
The Bisons then took the biggest lead of the game with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning, benefitting from a very close call on a one-out walk by Yoshi Tsutsugo. Chavez Young was off with the pitch and IronPigs catcher, Rafael Marchan threw a bullet down to second base that would've completed the inning-ending doubleplay had it not been for the free pass.
The Herd immediately took advantage of the break. Three pitches later, Stevie Berman crushed a double to the gap in left-center to score Young. Otto Lopez followed with a double down the third base line, scoring Berman for a 6-4 lead. Two batters later, Capra barreled up on a breaking ball to drive an RBI-single into left field for the 7-4 advantage.
However, the IronPigs came right back in the seventh, themselves taking advantage of their opponents' miscue. Following a two-out fielding error by Lopez, Lehigh Valley tallied three unearned runs on a hit batter, a walk, an infield single and a second Herd error in the inning.
Casey Lawrence started for the Bisons, but failed in his bid to become the team's first 10-game winner. The veteran righty struck out six batters and didn't issue a walk, but was hit for a season-worst three home runs.
Capra finished the game 2-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Lopez added two hits and two runs scored, raising his August batting average to .441 with 15 hits in eight games.
Berman reached base in all four of his plate appearances with a single, a double and two walks.
With the series tied at two games each, the Bisons will host the IronPigs Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. for Hockey Night at the Ballpark with the Buffalo Sabres and presented by ADRPO Sports. The game will feature a pre-game Autograph Session with Sabres and Buffalo Beauts players, a ceremonial first pitch by Jeff Skinner and a raffle of the game-worn and autographed Hockey Night jerseys worn by the Bisons players.
