Durham Bulls News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Bulls shortstop Xavier Edwards clubbed a game-high four hits and first baseman Jim Haley recorded three hits, homering while driving in three runs, however Tides shortstop Jordan Westburg went deep and drove in four runs as a pair of four-run innings propelled Norfolk's 9-8 win over Durham on Friday evening at Harbor Park.

The Bulls struck in the opening frame courtesy of DH Luke Raley's RBI single to right. The Tides would answer with a tally in the third before RF Ruben Cardenas crushed a solo shot in the fifth to give Durham a 2-1 advantage. Norfolk would later score four in the last of the fifth, highlighted by Westburg's three-run shot, to go up 5-2, though Haley's three-run blast in the subsequent frame evened the contest at 5-5.

The Tides, however would go back ahead in the seventh with another four-run spurt in the seventh for a four-run lead. That margin remained until the ninth, when Durham narrowed the deficit to one courtesy of C Rene Pinto's three-run blast to right. The Bulls would go on to put the tying run on third base, yet were unable to complete their late comeback effort.

Edwards (4-5, R) recorded a game-high four knocks, with Haley (3-5, R, HR, 3 RBI), Raley (2-5, RBI) and SS Vidal Brujan (2-4, 2 R, BB) adding multi-hit efforts of their own. The defeat snaps the Bulls' six-game win streak, though the club remains on top of the International League East Division. Durham had also won nine of their last ten contests entering play on Friday.

Tides reliever Alexander Wells (2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 SO) earned the victory, while righty Cole Uvila (0.1 IP, H, SO) notched his tenth save. Tampa Bay righty JT Chargois (0.1 IP, H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, SO) suffered the defeat while pitching for the Bulls as part of his MLB Rehab Assignment, while fellow Rays right-hander Yonny Chirinos (3.0 IP, H, R, ER, 2 BB, SO) yielded one run on one hit in his three innings pitched as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment.

The two teams are set to continue their series at Harbor Park on Saturday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. Durham's starting pitcher has not yet been announced, while Norfolk is expected to give the ball to RHP Matt Harvey.

The Bulls return home to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, August 23 to start a six-game set versus the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch of the series opener is slated for 6:35pm.
