Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indianapolis Indians (56-57) came out on top of a close game against the Iowa Cubs (52-63) on Friday night at Victory Field, claiming a 3-2 victory to even the series at two wins apiece.

Like Thursday night's game, the matchup featured dominant pitching performances. The showcase began with both starters - Hayden Wesneski for Iowa and Michael Burrows for Indianapolis. Wesneski, in his third start for Iowa, went five innings and allowed only one hit, a second-inning double to Cal Mitchell. He collected five strikeouts, allowed just one walk, and retired the final 11 batters he faced in order.

On the other side, Burrows kept the I-Cubs off the board through his five innings of work as well. He allowed four hits, but none of them for extra bases, and walked one. His outing included six strikeouts and two one-two-three innings, preserving the score at zero on both sides after five innings.

With the bullpens taking over in the sixth, the pitchers' duel continued. David Bote singled to lead off the frame, but was removed from the base paths with a double play, while Blake Whitney retired all three batters he faced in the bottom half of the inning.

Iowa went down one-two-three once more in the seventh before Indianapolis finally got the scoring started in their half of the inning. Whitney allowed a leadoff single, then Wyatt Short took over and allowed a single to his first batter, too. That brought up Mitchell, who hit his seventh home run of the year to give the Indians the first lead of the ballgame, at 3-0.

One inning later, Iowa's offense broke through, too. After two outs had been recorded in the eighth, Darius Hill walked ahead of Bote, who launched a homer of his own to cut the Indians' lead to one. CD Pelham and Ben Leeper combined to pitch a scoreless bottom half of the inning and keep the game close, but Iowa couldn't drive the tying run in in the ninth. Eric Hanhold allowed a leadoff single, but induced two ground-outs - one of them for a double play - to lock in the 3-2 victory for Indianapolis.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Hayden Wesneski's five-inning scoreless outing was his longest since joining the Cubs' system.

Iowa's staff had pitched 16 consecutive scoreless innings before surrendering runs in tonight's game.

CD Pelham pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit and one walk in his Iowa debut.

The Indians turned three double plays tonight, tying Iowa's opponent single-game season high.

Iowa will continue their series against Indianapolis tomorrow, with the fifth of six games scheduled for a 6:05 CT first pitch. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
