Nashville Ambushes Jacksonville for Twin Bill Sweep

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite home runs from Luis Aviles Jr., Troy Johnston and Willians Astudillo, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were swept in their doubleheader with the Nashville Sounds, 6-5 and 7-2 Friday night in front of 5,182 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Nashville (69-45) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first in game one against Jacksonville (61-54) starter Trevor Rogers (L, 0-1). Sal Frelick led off with a single and went to third on a double from Esteury Ruiz. Brice Turang smacked the third consecutive hit of the inning, scoring both Frelick and Ruiz to put the Sounds ahead 2-0.

The second inning saw Nashville increase their lead and open the game up with a big lead. With one out, Matt Lipka singled and stole second. Frelick walked and two batters later, Turang (10) blasted a three-run home run to give the Sounds a 5-0 lead.

The final run for the Sounds crossed the plate in the third inning. With one out, Joey Wiemer doubled and then scored as Weston Wilson reached on an error to put Nashville ahead 6-0.

The Jumbo Shrimp started their climb up the mountain in the bottom of the fifth. Victor Victor Mesa led off the inning with a double and went to second two batters later on a walk by Erik González. A wild pitch put runners on second and third as Brian Miller walked, loading the bases. Bryan De La Cruz smacked a two-run single to cut the deficit to 6-2. Miller went to third on the single and scored on a sac fly from Willians Astudillo to make the score 6-3.

Jacksonville made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth, Aviles Jr. (4) walloped a solo home run to lead off the inning two make it a two-run game. After a fly out, Bryson Brigman and González singled to put runners on first and third. Miller reached on a fielder's choice that scored Brigman to bring the Jumbo Shrimp back, trailing by one.

The rally fell short as the Jumbo Shrimp were retired in order to give the Sounds a 6-5 win in game one.

Game two started out rough for Jacksonville, as Nashville blew the game open with a five-run opening frame against Jumbo Shrimp starter Cody Mincey (L, 1-3). Frelick started the inning off with a single and went to third on another single from Turang. Jon Singleton walked, loading the bases. Pablo Reyes swatted a two-run single giving the Sounds an early 2-0 lead. With runners on first and second, Garrett Mitchell followed with a two-run double, increasing the lead to 4-0. Two batters later, Patrick Dorrian hit a single that scored Mitchell and the Sounds closed the first frame with a 5-0 lead.

The Sounds continued to stay hot in the third. With one out, Reyes singled, stole second and scored on the second double of the game for Mitchell that increased the lead to 6-0. Two batters later, Dorrian knocked his second base hit, scoring Mitchell to give Nashville a 7-0 advantage.

Jacksonville's offense had a rough doubleheader, combining for just 10 hits over the 14 innings. After being no-hit through the first three innings, their first knock came on a two-out solo home run from Troy Johnston (1), his first in Triple-A. That cut the deficit to 7-1.

The final Jumbo Shrimp tally came in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Willians Astudillo (14) blasted a solo home run to make the score 7-2.
