Condors Struggle but Maintain Playoff Position

April 4, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Last Week

Friday, Fresno 4 vs. CONDORS 2; attn: 6,754

Fresno opened up a 3-0 lead before Lars-Peder Nagel scored two third period goals to give the Condors hope of a comeback. Nagel's second of the game came with the goaltender pulled and only 1:29 remaining in regulation. But Dan Tessier's 24th goal of the season sailed into the Condors empty net to seal the win for the visitors, and keep Fresno within reach of Bakersfield, just two points behind.

Saturday, LAS VEGAS 2 vs. Condors 1

Sylvain Deschatelets gave the Condors a 1-0 lead in Las Vegas on Saturday night, but it wouldn't hold. Matt Dzieduszycki, who earlier in the game took out Condors G Yutaka Fukufuji when he crashed the Condors net, scored twice to provide the only offense needed for the Wranglers. Davis Parley finished the game with 41 of 43 saves in relief of Fukufuji.

Where we stand

Bakersfield sits in fourth place in the West Division with a record of 38-22-10 and 86 points. They trail third place Idaho by three points. Second place Long Beach has 92 points on the season and is now out of reach. First, second and third place are all up for grabs entering the final week of the regular season.

News from the Nest

· The Condors special teams have struggled lately. The power play has gone 5-for-50 (10%) over the last 10 games and the penalty kill is just 21- 27 (77.7%) over the last eight contests.

· G Yutaka Fukufuji left Saturday's game with a leg injury and did not return. The extent of his injury will be determined this week. Davis Parley replaced Fukufuji and now has played in four of the last five games since his acquisition two weeks ago.

· Saturday's game was only the 16th time out of 70 games this season that the Condors have been outshot.

· Bakersfield is 30-1-1 when allowing two or less goals this season. Saturday was the first regulation loss in such a game.

· The Condors haven't spent more than two total weeks all season lower than second place in the West Division. But with a 2-6-1 record in their last nine games, Bakersfield can no longer finish any higher than third place. Idaho needs just one point in their final three games to guarantee the Condors finish no better than fourth place.

· Bakersfield must beat Fresno out for fourth place outright, as the Falcons would hold the tie breaker in wins.
