Gulls Have Three Games Left, All At Home
April 4, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ The road hasn't been too kind for the San Diego Gulls this season and last week was no exception, as the red-hot Idaho Steelheads swept them in a three-game series. San Diego, now eliminated from the playoffs for the first time, will close out the season with three home games this week.
The Gulls started their week with a loss Wednesday in Idaho, which officially eliminated them from postseason contention. They also fell Friday and Saturday in Boise, as the playoff bound Steelheads cruised to victory both times.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
March 30 @ Idaho: Tim Verbeek, Warren Peters and Bobby Russell supplied the offense and goaltender Frank Doyle stopped 23 of 24 shots, leading Idaho to a 3-1 victory. Verbeek and Peters gave the Steelheads a 2-0 lead late in the second period, before the Gulls got on the board 17:12 into the third period. Russell, however, answered less than a minute later and that was all she wrote.
April 1 @ Idaho: Peters notched three points and Verbeek added a pair of goals en route to another Idaho victory, this time beating San Diego 5-1. It was a 1-1 game seven minutes into the first period, but the Steelheads took over from there. They scored two more in the first and tacked on another in the second and third, while netminder Matthew Yeats turned aside 22 of 23 shots.
April 2 @ Idaho: Verbeek notched three points, while three others finished with multipoint games, as the Steelheads finished off the sweep with a 5-2 win. San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Max Birbraer and Darren Clark, but it was all Idaho from there. The Steelheads scored five unanswered goals in the contest, which was more than enough for Doyle, who stopped 20 shots.
PLAYER NOTES: Brett Draney has four points (2g, 2a) since joining the Gulls... Brian Gornick, who leads the team with 46 points (23g, 23a), was called up to the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch on Monday... Joel Stepp and Andrew Canzanello were both recalled to the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks... Wes Rypien was activated from the injured list... Nick Ganga is still out with a knee injury... Sean O'Connor also remains out of the lineup with a sprained knee... NHL veteran Curtis Brown has opted not to play for the remainder of the season...
TEAM NOTES: The Gulls finish the season with three games at home, where they are 22-8-3... They finished 12-21-3 on the road... San Diego is 28-4-2 this season when scoring three-plus goals in a game, but just 6-25-4 when scoring two or less... Since the all-star break, they are 8-4-1 at home and 5-13-1 on the road (13-17-2 overall)... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents seven times since the all-star break (32 games)...
UPCOMING GAMES: San Diego closes out the season with a three-game homestand, which starts Wednesday against the Steelheads at 7:05 p.m. It will be the last "Wacky Wednesday" of the season, featuring "Pooch Party III." All fans are invited to bring their dog to the game!!! The Gulls will then host the Victoria Salmon Kings for the first time on Friday and Saturday, April 9.
