Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - "Shred Rich Rodriguez Night" got off to a great start but ended poorly as the Charlotte Checkers (20-18-0-4=44) scored six of the final seven goals in the game to beat the Wheeling Nailers (14-26-2-3=33), 6-3 on Saturday night at WesBanco Arena. Kelly Miller and Joe Guenther each contributed three points (1g, 2a) for the Nailers only to be outshined by Bruce Graham's five points (1g, 4a) and Mark Lee's four (2g, 2a).

The Nailers played one of their strongest first periods of the season jumping out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of 15 shots on goal. Guenther and Young scored within 27 seconds of each other at 8:26 and 8:53 respectively. Both came even strength with Guenther slamming home a Miller rebound and Young sliding a Guenther feed through Chris Holt.

The second period belonged to the Checkers, scoring three times in the frame to take their first lead of the game 3-2. Lee had a hand in all three goals. His slapshot deflected off Ryan Murphy and into the net at 4:44 of the second to cut the Nailers lead in half. Graham sprung Lee in on a breakaway, beating Martin Houle at 15:35. Lee returned the favor setting up Graham at 17:32.

Lee notched his second of the game 5:00 into the third period to give Charlotte a little breathing room at 4-2. The Nailers responded with a Miller goal at 12:15 to cut it back within one but Chris Capraro and Mike Bayrack finished off the game with goals late in the third.

Wheeling hits the road for six games against Southern opponents from Feb. 6-12. They take on the Augusta Lynx, Wednesday at 7:05pm. Their next home game is not until Feb. 22 when they welcome the Elmira Jackals at 7:35pm. It's Faith and Family Night with the first 2,500 fans receiving Wheeling Nailers t-shirts.
