Chiefs surge in late stages, win in shoot out 2-1

Johnstown, PA- The defending American Conference Champion Dayton Bombers extended their winless streak with a tough 2-1 shootout loss to the Johnstown Chiefs on Saturday night.

Getting back to North division business, the Bombers and the Chiefs matched tempo throughout the opening period. Neither team found the back of the net in the first twenty minutes, and Dayton led in shots on goal at the break 8-5.

Chances presented themselves on either side of the ice, with goaltending by Bombers net minder Jeremy Duchesne and Chiefs goalie Ryan Nie keeping the game deadlocked through forty minutes. Johnstown edged Dayton in shots for the second period 7-5 for a two-period total of 13-12 Dayton.

Brad Bonello notched the games first goal just :41 in, putting the Bombers ahead by one until Johnstown's captain Randy Rowe added the tying goal with just :54 seconds left in the third period. Neither team would score in the overtime, and tied 2-2 in the sudden-death shootout, Johnstown's Mike Sgroi added his 16th goal of the season to win the game 2-1.

With the loss, Dayton's record now stands at 19-1-8 for 46 points and sole possession of fourth place in the North Division. Dayton now returns to the Nutter Center for a Friday night match up with the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7pm.
