South Carolina Stingrays News Release

Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays traveled to Duluth, GA to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators for the second game of a home and home. After defeating the Gladiators 5-0 in the first game at the North Charleston Coliseum, they fell by a 7-3 score at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

"It was a case of night and day," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "In this league we are looking for consistency, and we didn't have that."

The Gwinnett Gladiators scored early and often in this contest, starting with a first period power play goal by Jim Jackson at 3:13 to give them a 1-0 lead after one period of play.

The second period was not as kind as the Gladiators out scored the Rays 4-1 in the period. Goals by Andy Brandt, Thomas Pospisil twice, and Jeff Campbell paced Gwinnett in the period. South Carolina got on the board in the period when Marty Guerin stole a pass and got an unassisted short handed goal. The goal was the 12th short handed goal of the season for South Carolina which leads the ECHL.

Trailing 5-1 going into the third period, the Rays made a modest comeback. Matt Scherer and Paul McIlveen scored just :42 seconds apart to cut the deficit to just two. Scherer's goal came at 3:30 from Trent Campbell, and was his sixth of the year. McIlveen's goal came at 4:12 from Steve Pinizzotto and Mike Gabinet and was his ninth of the season. McIlveen has scored in both games since he came back from a knee injury.

Two late goals by Gwinnett, one from Mike Hamilton, the other from Stuart MacRae, sealed the victory for the Gladiators, with the final score 7-3.

The winning goaltender was Craig Kowalski who stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 25 of the 32 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play, while killing off seven of the nine short handed situations they faced.

The Rays are back in action on Tuesday night back at the comfy confines of the North Charleston Coliseum when they take on the Charlotte Checkers. Drop of the puck is at 7:05.
