Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Hunter Owen launched his 16th home run of the season and Diego Castillo followed with his first in Triple-A, but the Indianapolis Indians fell short of the Iowa Cubs on Friday night, 9-7.

Facing a 9-6 deficit in the ninth inning, Diego Castillo hit a leadoff home run off Brendon Little (S, 1) to score his second run of the night. It was just his third game played with the Indians since being promoted from Double-A Altoona on Tuesday.

After a back-and-forth battle through the first three innings, a two-run, two-out single off the bat of starting pitcher Cory Abbott (W, 2-6) gave the I-Cubs (44-62) a lead they would never relinquish. MLB rehabber Willson Contreras followed the frame with a solo home run in the fifth, his second home run of the series, to take a 4-2 lead.

A leadoff triple by Johneshwy Fargas sparked the I-Cubs five-run seventh frame to plate insurance runs for the win. Tyler Ladendorf and Levi Jordan each recorded RBI doubles in the frame.

The Indians (50-55) put up four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut Iowa's lead. Jared Oliva also led off the bottom half with a triple, his third of the year, and Owen then capped the frame with a three-run long ball.

Starter Cam Vieaux exited the game with two outs in the second inning after being hit in the foot with a comebacker. Matt Eckelman (L, 2-5) entered in relief and allowed three runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings.

The Indians will look to retake the series lead on Saturday night at 7:05 PM ET. RHP James Marvel (4-6, 5.60) will take the mound against RHP Matt Swarmer (3-6, 5.40).
