Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (44-62) got a quality start from Cory Abbott to beat the Indianapolis Indians (50-55) by a score of 9-7, Friday at Victory Field.

After two quick outs, Indy rallied with three singles in a row to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Iowa manufactured a run in the third to tie it, but Bligh Madris brought around a run in the home half to bring their lead back to one.

The I-Cubs took their first lead in the fourth inning, when starter Cory Abbott helped himself out with a two-out, two RBI single. Willson Contreras added to Iowa's lead, making it 4-2 with a solo home run in the fifth, his second of the series.

Abbott kept Indy at just the two runs, earning his first quality start since his first start of the season, coming back on May 6 against the Indians. The righty spun six innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and five walks while striking out nine.

Both offenses broke out in the seventh inning, turning a 4-2 game into a 9-6 game. Iowa scored five runs highlighted by doubles from Tyler Ladendorf and Levi Jordan in the top half of the inning, but the Indians answered with four runs of their own on a Madris RBI single and Hunter Owen three-run shot.

Indianapolis got a home run from Diego Castillo in the ninth to bring them within two, but Brendon Little recorded the final three outs for his first career Triple-A save, tying the series at two.
