Worcester Red Sox News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Worcester Red Sox (58-47) clinched a series victory against the Rochester Red Wings (43-59) on Friday night, a 4-2 victory at Frontier Field.

The WooSox scored four runs in the first three innings, all the offense they would eventually need in the team's 10th win in 11 games. In the second, Franchy Cordero doubled then moved to third on a groundout to the right side. Johan Mieses was next, and he cracked a sac-fly to center to put Worcester on top 1-0.

Over his last three games, Cordero has gone 7-10 with 6 RBI and six-run scored. The 27-year-old also has four extra-base hits in that span, including a home run on Thursday night.

An inning later, Matheny began the third with a double, and after a walk and a strikeout, Joey Meneses extended the lead to 2-0 with a sac-fly to right. One batter later, Cordero was in the middle of it again, singling on the ground to left for a two-run base hit.

A four-run lead was all the Worcester arms needed: Raynel Espinal got the start-his first since making his MLB debut on August 30-and tossed three scoreless with six strikeouts. Austin Brice gave up one run over the next two, before Brandon Brennan (1-2) and Michael Feliz combined to keep Rochester off the board in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Kaleb Ort notched the save, allowing one run in the ninth but escaping a bases-loaded jam to close the night.

The Red Wings got their runs on a Blake Swihart homer to right in the fifth and and a Swihart RBI walk against Ort in the ninth.

With the win, Worcester grabbed a victory for the tenth time in 11 tries-it has now won two straight series and is 9-1 to begin the two-week road trip.

The WooSox continue the six-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. Radio coverage starts live at 6:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. On the mound, Rochester's Cade Cavalli (0-1, 15.00) gets the start.
