Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The ECHL announced today that Gladiators rookie defenseman Jon Awe has been named to the ECHL All Rookie team. The All-Rookie Team is determined in a vote of ECHL coaches, who were asked to select a goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards. A rookie is a player who has played in less than 25 professional games.

Awe began the season with the Gladiators playing five games for Gwinnett before being called up to the Portland Pirates on November 18th. Awe appeared in 17 games with the Pirates where he posted an assist in 17 AHL games.

The Memphis, Tennessee native was named the ECHL Player of the Week for the week of February 26th through March 5th. Awe had a team-leading five goals, six points and a plus-minus rating of +7 while helping the Gladiators clinch a berth in the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs that week.

In 46 games this season for the Gladiators, Awe has recorded 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points and a +19 rating for the Gladiators. He has posted 27 of his 34 points in his last 23 games with Gwinnett.

Awe played four collegiate seasons at Northeastern University recording 6 goals and 26 assists in 111 collegiate games. His 13 points during the 2003-04 season led all Northeastern University defensemen.

The Gwinnett Gladiators, who have already clinched a first round bye in the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs, continue the 2005-06 ECHL season at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Tuesday, April 4th as they host the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators offer several ticket packages for different needs as well as group outings, suites and birthday parties.
