Mississippi Granted Voluntary Suspension Extension

April 4, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced on Tuesday that the ECHL Board of Governors has unanimously approved a request from the Mississippi Sea Wolves to extend their Voluntary Suspension to include the 2006-07 season.

The Sea Wolves told the league that they were informed that the Mississippi Coast Coliseum would not be ready for the upcoming season but that it would be available for 2007-08.

"The ECHL appreciates the hard work of Mike Rogers, the Sea Wolves ownership and the Sea Wolves staff as well as the management of the Gulf Coast Coliseum, state and local officials who tried to find a way to have the arena ready for play," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. "Unfortunately, for many reasons, it could not happen. We are disappointed for the loyal Sea Wolves fans but really look forward to the return of the team for the 2007-08 season."

The team had a Voluntary Suspension for 2005-06 under the league's hardship provisions as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The team is located in Biloxi which suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Katrina, resulting in extensive damage to the team's home arena, including flood damage to team offices and locker rooms as well as the ice-making equipment and two Zambonis.

The Texas Wildcatters, who had a Voluntary Suspension for 2005-06 as a result of Hurricane Rita, were scheduled to reopen their offices on Monday as the team continues its preparations to return to the ice in October.
