Admirals Continue to Battle Through Grueling Stretch

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals will look forward to contests at home against the Lowell Devils on Friday and Saturday this weekend as they continue a grueling stretch of eight games in ten days this week.

Last week, the Admirals dropped three close contests to start the tough stretch of schedule. On Friday night at Scope, Providence netted three goals in the first three minutes of the third period and upended the Admirals 3-2. On Saturday night in Hershey, the Bears scored thrice in the last four minutes of the game to hand Norfolk a 6-4 setback. Last night in Albany, the Admirals erased a two-goal deficit early in the third period before eventually falling to the River Rats 4-2.

After an off day today, the Admirals will face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers tomorrow and the Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday on the road. They will then return to Norfolk to face off against the Lowell Devils on Friday and Saturday nights before embarking on a five-game road trip beginning in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday evening.

EAST DIVISION STANDINGS

At 23-29-3-5 (54 points), the Admirals are in seventh place in the East Division. The division is led by the Hershey Bears (39-17-1-5, 84 points). They are followed by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (36-17-3-5, 80 points), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (37-19-2-2, 78 points), Binghamton Senators (32-21-5-3, 72 points), Philadelphia Phantoms (31-25-2-1, 65 points) and Albany River Rats (26-27-3-3, 58 points).

ADMIRALS' LOG

- Norfolk is in the midst of a stretch of eight games in ten days. The stretched kicked off last Friday at home against Providence and will include travel after six games.

- The Admirals will close out the season series against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Tuesday night. Norfolk is the only team with points in three games at the Arena at Harbor Yard this season. Norfolk has two victories and an overtime loss in Bridgeport this season.

- The Admirals will then square off against the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Wachovia Center on Wednesday night. This game was originally slated for April 12. This is the 82nd all-time regular season meeting between the Admirals and Phantoms and is the 41st played in the City of Brotherly Love. Norfolk holds a 21-14-1-4-0 record all-time in Philadelphia.

- The Lowell Devils will make their only trip of the season to Norfolk this weekend with games against the Admirals on Friday and Saturday. Norfolk is 6-2-0-0 all-time against the Devils with a 3-1-0-0 mark against them at Norfolk Scope Arena.

- Defenseman Jay Leach, the only former Admiral to skate for Lowell this season, has been on NHL recall to New Jersey since December 3. He has appeared in a career-high 24 NHL games so far this season and recorded his first career NHL point with an assist on November 23 at Tampa Bay.

- Forward Brandon Segal has points in seven of his last nine games (8G, 2A).

- Defenseman Mike Lundin has assists in back-to-back games and points in five of his last seven games (0G, 6A).

- Forward Justin Keller has points in eight straight home games dating back to January 23 (7G, 5A) and also has goals in four straight home games dating back to February 7 (5G). All 12 of Keller's goals this season have come at Norfolk Scope Arena.

- The home team has won every game in the season series between Norfolk and Albany in the seven games thus far. The Admirals fell to the River Rats 4-2 on Sunday evening.

- Two Norfolk netminders chipped in on offense last week to record their first career AHL points. Riku Helenius assisted on a Justin Keller goal on Friday versus Providence. Craig Kowalski assisted on a Brandon Bochenski goal on Saturday in Hershey.

- Norfolk lost on Friday versus Providence and Saturday at Hershey despite carrying a lead into the third period in both contests. The Admirals are now 16-4-2-2 when leading after two periods.

PARKING AVAILABLE AT NORFOLK PLAZA HOTEL

A significant amount of parking spaces (based on availability) are available for Admirals games this season at the Norfolk Plaza Hotel (formerly the Norfolk Radisson Hotel). Parking spots will be opened to Admirals fans for $5 per game. The Norfolk Plaza Hotel is located immediately across Brambleton Avenue from Norfolk Scope Arena. Fans who would like to take advantage of this opportunity are asked to enter the Brambleton Avenue parking entrance. A sign will be posted at that entrance.

Please note that there are events at Chrysler Hall Friday night occurring simultaneously as the Admirals' games against Lowell on both Friday and Saturday nights. This will likely lead to increased parking congestion.

THIS WEEK IN ADMIRALS HISTORY (MARCH 2 - 8)

March 4, 1994 ... Admirals 2 at Wheeling Thunderbirds 1

- Mark Michaud makes 33 saves and sets an ECHL record with his 33rd win of the year as the Admirals claim a 2-1 victory at the Wheeling Civic Center. Michaud would go on to finish the year with 38 wins and 65 games played. Both marks remain ECHL records to this day.

March 5, 2008 ... Admirals 4 at Worcester Sharks 0

- Marc Denis makes 32 saves as the Admirals register their first road shutout of the season with a 4-0 blanking of the Worcester Sharks at DCU Center. Matt Smaby, Radek Smolenak, Bracken Kearns and Justin Keller score for Norfolk, which grabs an early lead in the match's second minute on Smaby's first marker of the year. Kevin Quick notches his first pro points with two assists for the victors.

March 7, 1999 ... Admirals 4 vs. Johnstown Chiefs 3

- The Admirals top the visiting Johnstown Chiefs by a 4-3 count at Scope. The victory is the 905th in John Brophy's coaching career, pushing him past former New York Islanders Coach Al Arbour into 2nd place on the "All-Time Professional Coaching Victories" list. Only Scotty Bowman has more. Dan Ceman posted his second career Admirals hat trick in the win, hitting the 30-goal mark in the process.

March 7, 2007 ... Admirals 4 vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2

- Adam Burish registers the winning goal with 3:31 left as the Admirals top the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-2 at Scope. Burish's marker is part of a three-goal third period for Norfolk, which trails 1-0 after one period and 2-1 in the third frame before rallying. Troy Brouwer, Carl Corazzini and Martin St. Pierre also score and Pierre Parenteau adds 2 assists. Corey Crawford claims the win for Norfolk with 27 saves.
